Catching up to this episode kinda late but I loved hearing your predictions of where cinema venues could end up in the near future. Basically revival houses that also do alternative programming like sportscasts and Mario kart nights. Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn does all of that (Mario Kart Mondays on small screens at their in-house bar). They also do many live score screenings and Pre-show live drag shows before a rep screening. Check out Nitehawk Cinema (only 2 locations and they're both in Brooklyn) next time you visit nyc! All of that is the main topic of my podcast Marquee Mixtape (www.marqueemixtape.com) if you wanna learn more about it. I hope The Filmcast opens a revival house one day. I'd def drop some coin in your Kickstarter campaign! Do it!!

This episode made me remember the days when your coffee table and various other furniture all doubled as storage areas for your VHS tapes.

As an avid vinyl-collector I like the short little breathing-room when switching sides of the record, but I can imagine it’s a bit more annoying when watching something on a screen.

Jeff really needs to check out the documentary Meru. It fits his criteria perfectly, and is also an excellent film and story.

Laserdiscs were a total pain back in the day. It was much better video quality than VHS, and it was widescreen, but with some films you had to flip the disc every half hour or so. I remember watching Blade Runner on Laserdisc and having to flip each disc and there were two discs, so you'd have to take three breaks of about a minute each to get through the film. It was not an ideal way to see a movie. Of course, with some early DVDs you had to flip them mid movie as well, before they developed dual layer discs. Then after they created dual layers, there was that brief pause in the middle for the layer break.

I just got to the end of the episode and Devindra says how 4k is the closest you can get to the way it was projected in a cinema. I always assumed 4k would be superior, especially as reels get slowly damaged over time. But maybe I'm wrong though

Simon Columb

I always thought that upgrading some dvds to blu/4k with something like Casablanca or Citizen Kane is silly as the DVD version is already superior to the versions Orson Welles and Michael Curtiz saw. A 4k version of classics is arguably "not the way the director intended" for it to be seen.

Looking over at the Summer Movie Wager, the three hosts are all out of the top 3 right now, with Dave in 4th, Devindra in 5th and Jeff DFL. Come on guys, you're not doing the podcast proud!

Only Jeff Cannatta would hand wave away “the sex lair I was compelled to work at as a teen had a bed overlooking the balcony but anyways the reason I bring this up is they had a LASERDISC player!!”

Mail question episodes are the best 🙌 Just wish they were longer :)

You’ve probably heard this already but there’s going to be a 4k screening of the Directors Cut of The Fall happening at a film festival in Switzerland, so chances of a future disc release are good.

When I was a kid we had a VHS tape with all 3 original Star Wars movies on it, but it also had the Jungle Book first. I always wanted to watch Star Wars, but my younger brothers would see the Jungle Book and ask to watch it (of course there was no way to skip past it without them seeing it) and my parents would make me watch it. To this day I still hate the Jungle Book…who in their right mind would put a film BEFORE the Star Wars trilogy rather than have them first and try to fit another movie after!?!

Hateful eight needs a 4k as well

Maxaveli

He is a star, a big, bright, shining star. (double Grant post!)

Grant Cosper

Hate that you’re probably right 😫 Nothing sets the mood like the multi-colored zigzag carpet of the early 90s.

Eric Trapp

Speed Racer should be on 4K for HDR

Mountain of Conflict

…did Devindra let something slip there?

Ryan

Anyone remember the Dragon Ball GT Final Bout PS game? You needed a specific Japanese cartridge.

David Esposito

That's what the Ziggy zaggy weird design is for, hiding the stains. Why clean when it looks like part of the pattern!?

Jacob Chimilar

Not even done with the episode. Have come here to say - Who the hell VOLUNTARILY fully carpets a sex lair?!?! The clean up must have been just awful.

Eric Trapp

A nice update on Se7en. It has a 4k master now, Fincher did a screening of it not too long ago and a release is coming in 2025 apparently.

Jacob Chimilar

I think the takeaway here is that Jeff’s upbringing was essentially Dirk Diggler’s plot in Boogie Nights.
