I’m only a little over halfway through the review but I’m surprised no one has mentioned Jack Reacher yet. It’s like Saulnier said to himself “What if Jack Reacher was black?” And then rather than the starting point that was just the whole concept. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the movie. Saulnier is a master craftsman and the scene work was definitely a step up from the pulpy cheese of Reacher. But all I could think the whole movie long was “Did any movie critics use Black Reacher for the headline of their review?”

Brad Arnold

He literally did not. They barely mentioned her.

Mathew

Seems he only does those for regular episodes.

One of my favorite reviews the show has done in a while. Definitely biased bc I loved this movie too and y’all were also all hot on it, but the enthusiasm was great and the discussion/commentary was awesome. Alex was a great guest too. (Maybe a good one to put a snippet of on the main feed to entice potential new patrons 👀)

Did Devindra say anything overtly feminist again in this episode? Like complaining that he wanted AnnaSophia Robb’s character to do more or she isn’t treated perfectly? He does this in literally EVERY single episode (see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and it’s absolutely grating.

I wanted to love this one as much as everyone else seems to - I was a big fan of Blue Ruin and Green Room - but it unfortunately sags so much in the middle that I found the overall experience lacking. Saulnier described this as “First Blood meets Michael Clayton” and I just wasn’t compelled by the Michael Clayton parts (despite loving that movie). I found myself not really caring about the investigation and the mechanics of the wider conspiracy. That opening scene sets up the conflict and stakes with perfect efficiency and I wish the rest of the movie was tighter and focused on that instead of the conspiracy, the court clerk, the judge, etc. There’s so much to like in this movie that you’ve mentioned, I just wish it was a tight 90 instead of 132 mins.

Why no limerick for Rebel Ridge?

I had to go back to the movie with subtitles just to make sure I heard it, but in the radio chatter after the pit maneuver they talk about the state police standing by and then later the state police are two minutes out. I think the movie is trying to say Sims called the state police.

Nice booking!

Hell yeah Alex winter!

You guys misread the cops’ actions at the end. They were trying to save their comrade.

Brian Deaton

Oh wow. While the sudden change in the cops at the end was sudden, I felt they did it cause one of their own might die if they didn’t get him to the hospital. The chief would have let the cop die. So they turned.
