Not It is Finished a la Jesus, but I Am Content

Mountain of Conflict

based on your recommendation I gave the show a shot. It is a really interesting show that I like the execution of but I think I just don't have the stomach for it which is new for me, usually fictional stuff I have no problems, it's the real ER shows I can't watch. I think that it is down to the feeling of realism they are achieving. Good show if you can handle it though! EDIT: after ep 1&2 felt difficult to get through, by episode 3 I was over the shock of it and started to enjoy it and now I'm caught up! It's worth a watch!

Jacob Chimilar

Came here to say this. I am thinking they must have meant it has disappeared off the radio, because otherwise it is a wild statement.

Don Wood

Anyone else thought they heard Jeff yelled he was “SORE” after his colonoscopy? I almost spit out my drink.

Danny C

That is not what they are saying. Of course new rock music is being made all the time. They are talking about rock not being part of the mainstream, part of popular culture. Cmon man.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Dave has been talking on it on Decoding TV!

Linus

Spider man was fine. Visually arresting but storytelling is just ok. Better than X-men 97? Not so far. Def not better than Earths mightiest heroes. Wild take by Jeff. But glad he enjoyed it!

Reynaldo K. Cruz

New rock music exists. Check out Eidola, Nevertel, Dance Gavin Dance

It’s really heart warming to hear Jeff share the story of his son watching Star Wars for the first time. I watched the Star Wars movies a few months ago with my 8 year old and his reaction to the big reveal in Empire was pretty similar to Jeff’s son…. He just turned to me and asked “is that true?” And that was the end of it. He really liked the original trilogy but when I showed him the prequels, he was jumping up and down on the couch playing with his lightsaber being a Jedi as the nigh lightsaber battles were playing on screen. At least he found a love for Star Wars so I can’t complain too much.

I hope you guys watched the Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer. Best part was when Ben Grimm shouts, “IT’S CLOBBERIN TIME, COUSIN!!”

Donald Ward

i always have to mention Skegss because my kid has gotten to play with them! 😱 https://youtu.be/BH1xj9qk-yk?si=6bwhPhpORjBSriEy

Exactly. There are so many bands I can’t even keep up. I’m sure if you listed your favorites I would have no idea who most of them were - and I go to at least a couple dozen concerts and a festival or two every year. Honestly I think the real issue is that there is TOO MUCH rock music out there. It’s hard for any one band to grab such a foothold that anyone outside the fandom takes notice. Outside of pop the monoculture doesn’t really exist anymore and anyone can put out their own album, so there’s just this torrent of music to sift through. It’s like indie games on Steam. There are a billion if them and a lot of them are good but how do you find them? That said King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is a wildly undefinable band making everything from prog disco to thrash metal and zero pop hits yet they’re somehow selling out arenas. So some people are getting found, even if they’ve never been near a grammy.

Brad Arnold

@brad arnold you’re a beast for dropping Skegss in here

Asher Maitin

Saying rock music doesn’t exist anymore is a wild claim to make. I mostly listen to dance music but my favorite albums of last year were from rock bands like fat dog, and king gizzard and the lizard wizards, and amyl and the sniffers. Maybe they were using a very narrow definition of rock music? Even then it’s hard to imagine those bands wouldn’t be considered rock music. They’re also very well known. I think that music is different now in how it is dispersed. The tv networks and radio stations are all incentivized to play music from the labels that are part of their larger umbrella corps, very similar to the payola days. It’s always been that way to an extent but it has become more exclusive over the last 3 decades. Considering the limited time these guys have I’m wouldn’t be surprised if they just aren’t able to seek out music or check out artists they hear in shows and films, and instead just hear what’s put in front of them or what the algorithm has pigeonholed their tastes into.

Bryson

I know (hope) Dave didn’t mean it this way but hearing him talk about his own death as “content” hurt my soul

Bmac

Guys, week after week I look to see what you’ve been watching and none of you have started watching The Pitt on Max - the one for HBO! In my opinion, it’s one of the best shows on TV, period!

I loved the performances in Companion, and I appreciate the commentary it was going for, but it felt ham-fisted to me. So much about the plot felt forced. I couldn't get over the idea that they would program the bots to not know they were bots, it just felt forced for the twist. I couldn't get over that the robots acted like humans when they wanted them to be relatable and the acted like robots when it was convenient for the plot. I couldn't get over how dumb some of the characters acted. I liked what they were trying to say, but the execution didn't work for me.

Ben Wesorick

I completely agree. It's always very telling when people say that rock is dead. There are so many amazing bands out there. My list wouldn't include most of the bands you listed, not because I don't like them, but because I haven't listened to them (I love Amyl and the Sniffers tho), and that just illustrates how deep the pool is in my opinion. I also feel like away from the Grammys and out of sight is exactly where rock should be, and it's a great time to be a rock fan. I can still see incredible bands for $50-$70 general admission, while fans of other genres are paying $500 for nosebleeds. Like I said, it feels so uninformed when people say rock is dead, but I think it's good for the remaining fans that people are so oblivious.

Ben Wesorick

The Grammys have almost never represented what’s happening outside of the pop charts. There is no new rock music in the pop charts. But that doesn’t mean that there’s not loads and loads of great young rock bands playing to crowds of thousands of people every night. It just means it’s not corporate pop music right now. There’s literally so much rock music happening right now it’s almost impossible to keep up with everything that’s out there.

Brad Arnold

Lol if you watch the grammys every genre has current artists and the rock category has 60s-90s legends. It might just be the economics of being in a band. Record labels take 90% of your money so if you are 5 people you split the remaining 10%

What? Rock music doesn’t exist now? Guys, I love you but just because you haven’t kept up doesn’t mean something doesn’t exist. Royal Blood, Turnstile, Viagra Boys, Fontaines DC, IDLES, Skegss, The Warning, Amyl and the Sniffers… the list goes on and on. Sure, these bands are headlining 2-5,000 seat venues instead of arenas but when I saw Pearl Jam, Nirvana and RHCP in 1991 it was in a 5k seater too. And rock certainly wasn’t dead in 1991.
