Dave, thank you so much for the recommendation for Smile 2. Not my usual cup o' tea, and I was underwhelmed by the first installment of the franchise but your description intrigued me. I ended up having a grand time. Also, interesting the other big body horror sensation from last year The Substance has a similar finale.

Speaking of Letterboxd. I’m new to it. If y’all want to follow me I’m Lino Rodriguez @linothejr Don’t have a lot of friends on there :)

Lino Rodriguez Jr.

It’d be great to have a list of all these on Letterboxd. Is there such a list?

toeknee

Patricia Arquette? Devindra...

Jim DiGiuseppe

I’m late to this episode but I wonder what the odds are the three films Jeff thinks will be battling for his heart: Fantastic 4, Superman, and Avatar all actually come out in 2025.

Don Wood

I recorded two voicemails about my favorite memories of the podcast for the anniversary episode and both had David’s harp sounds listed. Could not get them under a minute so didn’t send but glad others appreciate the “quality” of his efforts.

Don Wood

Do we tell Dave what 28 Years Later was shot on……

Tim Langford

I wonder if Dave’s pre-primed to dislike musical biopics (he does regularly reference Walk Hard) and anything barring the next Amadeus will illicit this response

Mark P

Same here, @johnterranova. My opinions usually align closely with Dave’s, but his intense dislike of A COMPLETE UNKNOWN—even though I could sort of understand his rationale—was a head-scratcher for me. As a longtime Bobhead and something of a Dylanologist, I was RELIEVED that the movie was not terrible, which was my fear going in, and I was even moved by it. But all due respect!! (And I doubt I’d have watched RED ROOMS without Dave’s strong endorsement.)

CDMatthew

Such an enjoyable recap of the year, enhanced by Dave’s inimitable, makeshift “harp sounds”!!

CDMatthew

I gave up after a few seasons. I enjoyed elements but the kids storyline feels like a Nickelodeon show or something, and the hammy tone gradually went from charming to embarrassing. Was fun for a bit though

DarmineDoggyDoor

This is definitely the year I’ve disagreed with Dave’s takes the most but the dude has brought me literally over a decade of amazing content so gotta respect his opinion. Dave if you see this, I’d love a segment in a Patreon episode where you discuss best 4ks of the year you collected and which you are looking forward to this upcoming year!

John Terranova

I bring this up again, but how are y'all sleeping on Cobra Kai??? I'm pretty sure Devindra's watching since he's a real one, but Jeff...David....watch Cobra Kai!!! It's incredible

Hahmstrung

Did you say John Blackthorne is Portuguese? Isn’t the character British? Also, I wish you would do categories like best director, best actor and stuff.

David Esposito

Just a small correction for Dave, All We Imagine As Light won the Grand Prix (2nd place) at Cannes, Anora won the Palme d’Or (1st place)

Rob

Tron Ares not being scored by Daft Punk is disappointing, but at least Nine inch Nails working on it is has potential. While not a great movie perse, I find myself revisiting Tron legacy relatively often for the visual vibes and music. So Tron Ares is actually one of my most looking forward to this year.

Del Nakamura

One thing to keep in mind about Tron Ares, Nine Inch Nails are doing the soundtrack this time around. That alone makes me excited about this movie.

Danny Champlin

Love this episode as always but yeah Jeff is cuckoo crazy for not liking transformers one SO HARD.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

The most offensive “Part 1” to me was Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse. I pay attention to movie news, and still didn’t realize it was going to end on a cliffhanger until the credits rolled. I was very disappointed. Number 5 on Dave’s list last year. For shame!

Danny Champlin

Thank you David & Devindra for bringing light to No Other Land.

I thought I'd share this with everyone, I made my top 10 and the bonus categories as well. I'll be curious to see if anyone has any overlap! 1 The Substance (an incredible time at the theatre) 2 Strange Darling (so many excellent twists and turns) 3 Challengers (same!) 4 Alien Romulus ( worth it just for the zero g blood) 5 Wicked (everything a big musical should be) 6 Furiosa (a wonderful return to that world) 7 Saturday night (a Sorkin-esque movie about SNL is right in my wheelhouse) 8 Heretic (sinister talking movie taking down religions? Yes please!) 9 Dune part 2 (undeniable craft and big budget spectacle with something to say about following leaders blindly that I liked) 10 Super/man (watched it on a recommendation, I loved it) Honourable Mentions: Caddo Lake, Lisa Frankenstein, It's What's Inside, His Three Daughters Biggest Disappointment: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, I love the franchise, I was excited for a new one but this one did not do the previous ones justice. Also MaXXXine for similar reasons Movie I didn't get: Anora, I just didn't really care about the guy that much and having to chase around town trying to find him wasn't compelling at all. Mikey Madison was great though. Movie They didn't get: Lisa Frankenstein, it was quirky and fun and funny and I had a lovely time with it. Best Non Movie Entertainment: first thing that came to mind was Smosh Games plays Dread (Smosh v Zombies/Aliens/Christmas) just a fun time watching friends who are good at improv playing a TTRPG with Jenga Favourite movie 2025: F1 Most anticipated movies of 2025: The Life of Chuck, Mickey 17, The Running Man, Fantastic Four First Steps, Tron Ares, Wicked For Good, Zootopia 2, Avatar 3, Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning
