Postcards and the Seinfeld Method

One of the things I swear by as a programmer is the Seinfeld Method . The idea behind it is that if you want to get something done - like your visual novel - the fastest way to get it done is to work on it every day. And the way to ensure you do that is to set a goal for every day, and make a mark on the calendar when you meet it. As you build up a streak of days, the desire to extend your accomplishment makes you keep going even on days when you might not otherwise want to.

Your daily goals don't have to be big ones. Your goal could be writing a hundred words, or drawing for ten minutes. For me, it's to make one commit - one change - to Ren'Py. That can be a tiny change, like writing some documentation. Or it could be a big one, like adding a new feature. For me, it seems to work because once I sit down and start to work on Ren'Py, I often keep going. Right now, I'm on 1,351 consecutive days of working on Ren'Py.

When I was trying to figure out what to do with the empty space the back of the postcards, the idea of a calendar like the one I use came to mind. Not everyone will want to use it for the Seinfeld Method, but at the very least you have a calendar! Since the first cards we send out won't get to our sponsors until the middle of June, they will have a July calendar on the back.

To hold you over until July, here's a mock-up of the back of the postcard . Be sure to keep an eye on this page, as in the next few days, I'll post a preview of the first postcard.

I use a paper calendar. I think the feeling of writing on the paper is an important part of it, as it gives a physical reward for an intellectual exercise.

That is a very interesting concept, and a great idea for the back of the postcard. What do you use yourself to keep track of your chain of days ? Do you use an app perhaps, or just a paper calendar?

I have no idea how you get anything done surrounded by starving cats. I mean, aren't they constantly demanding your attention?

Renpytom

cool. I use the "starving cats method" instead. It works well too :D
