Ch.1.2: Gunsmoke and Goddesses.

Xander woke up feeling groggy, his back a little stiff From waking up laying on the floor. Sitting up, he looked around bleary-eyed. ‘What am I doing on the floor?’ he silently wondered to himself. It all came flooding back to him when he noticed the goddess and the blonde young dungeon core Rokuro Labyrinthhart sharing his bed. The wish he’d made last night, The revelations he'd received about becoming Roland Deschain’s spiritually adopted son. And now having to seek the Dark Tower. Taking a long, slow, and deep breath, Xander silently let it out. It was a lot to hit him all at once, first thing in the morning. Running a hand down his face, he thought, ‘OK, first things first, breakfast, then think deep thoughts.’

So thinking, he tiptoed up the stairs, and went to find some food for himself and his guests. He found his parents sitting at the kitchen table, both nursing cups of coffee, when he entered. He stopped dead, like a rabbit facing a fox. Hoping that if he didn't move, they wouldn't notice him. He was not so lucky.

His father motioned to an empty chair, “Have a seat, son. We need to talk.” Tony felt bile and self hatred rise in his throat when he saw his son flinch as he motioned to the chair, But he was happy that Xander sat down anyway.

Xander fidgeted nervously as he waited for his parents to speak. Finally, he couldn't wait any longer and he said, “You wanted to talk about something. What is it, Tony?”

“Well, son, after we met that… She is a goddess, right?” Seeing Xander, nod he continued. “ After we met her last night, Your mother and I started thinking about things. How we've raised you. How we failed to raise you properly. And now we realize that, despite us, or perhaps because of us. You've grown up to be one hell of a man.”

“Thank you?” Xander said, confused on if he was being complimented or not. He couldn't remember ever being complimented by his parents if he was being honest. So this was coming out of left field for him.

“Relax, Xander,” Tony told him, “It's a compliment, You're nothing like me, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I'm just a waste management specialist.”

His eyebrows raising to his hairline, Xander found himself asking, “You're a garbage man?”

The elder Harris shook his head, “No, I get paid too much to be called a garbage man. I am a waste management specialist,” Tony corrected with a bit of heat in his tone.

Clearing her throat and putting her hand on her husband's shoulder, Jessica Harris said, “Dear, I believe you said you'd work on your temper?”

“Right, right. Sorry Jess.” Tony apologized before continuing, “Anyway, son. What you're trying to say is that we're proud of you.”

“OK….Who are you and what have you done with Tony and Jess? Did Belldandy brainwash you guys last night and just not tell me or what?”

Sighing in resignation, Tony responded.“We deserve that. But it's true, your mother and I really are proud of you. You've seen how horrible this town can be after dark, and instead of running away screaming or becoming a gibbering rabbit living in the woods, You stood and fought. That takes guts, Moxie, charisma, Chutzpah whatever the hell you want to call it. You've got it, son, and you've got it in spades.”

Blinking owlishly, Xander asked, “Wait, you two know about the-?”

“The zombies, demons and other ne'er-do wells in this town?” Tony answered, “Yeah, they're kind of hard to miss.” He scoffed, “Gangs on PCP killing people with BBQ forks, my ass. And they all just so happen to be drained of blood, the morgue has the highest percentage of body lost in the state? Probably the country? Yeah, right. And maybe pigs will start flying.”

“Don't even bring that up. It might actually start happening,” Xander said as he ran a hand down his face. This was all way too much for him to absorb this early in the morning. His parents knew about the supernatural. His parents were proud of him. His parents, we're glad he  didn't end up like them? All this combined on top of what he learned last night about his destiny to find The Dark Tower, was a bit too much to take in the wee hours of the morning. So he promptly got up and started cooking breakfast for about five people. He had no idea if Rokuro or Bell needed to eat, but he was going to at least offer them some food.

As he distracted himself with some cooking, he decided to ask his parents some questions. “So if you're a waste management specialist Tony, what the heck does Jessica do?”

“I collect patents that my grandfather had back in the day. He owned the old Calyx factory building. In fact, your Uncle Rory used to work there for a time before he took over the old junkyard. That's how I met your father, through your Uncle Rory.”

“OK, but why does Uncle Rory keep buying me Hawaiian shirts every Christmas?”

“Rory has always had an odd sense of humor. But hey, at least he bought you clothes. It's more than we did,” Tony said under his breath to his own self depreciation.

“What are you cooking anyway, Xander?” Jessica asked, knowing she really didn't expect him to call her mom anytime soon.

“Eggs Sausage toast. enough to feed about six people,” he replied succinctly.

“Six?” Jessica asked, befuddled, “But there's only four of us?”

‘Oh, that's right. They haven't met Rokuro or Holly yet, have they? Oh joy.’ Turning around, he said. “That’s because Belldandy brought other guests. You just haven't met them yet. I'll go get them now so you can introduce yourselves. Try to be civil.”

Once her son left, Jessica turned to her husband and asked, “This is going to be difficult, isn't it?”

“Of course it is, Jess. We've treated him as almost subhuman since he was like ten. I still remember what happened when I got that clown for his birthday. The house caught on fire somehow, and I blamed him for it.”

“Plus, he was scared to death of that clown,” Jessica recalled.

“Yeah, he was afraid of the clown, wasn't he? Of course, we found out later the guy was John Wayne Gacy. So we dodged a bullet there,” Tony sighed as he ran his hands down his face. “We have a lot to make up for when it comes to our son, so might as well start by doing the best we can to support him with this sudden quest he's on.”

“I agree,” Jessica said, nodding her head, “I don't know how we can help, but we should do what we can. I suppose we can start by being nice to his guests.”

“Yeah, that'd be a start,” Tony solemnly agreed.

Clearing his throat, Xander said, “Tony. Jessica. I'd like to introduce you to Belldandy of the Norn, her Angel Holy Bell, And Rokuro Labyrinthhart, my friend and living Dungeon Core,” He motioned to each person in turn, starting with the, Tall brunette in a chiffon toga, the winged Angel who was hanging on her shoulder and ending in the blonde  haired blue eyed girl in the red and white dress.

“Did you just say that young lady is a living Dungeon Core, son?” Tony asked after a moment of silence with heavy confusion evident in his tone.

‘This is going to take a while to explain.’ Thought to himself as he sat around the table And divvied up the food.

Spike knocked on Drucilla's door and walked in carefully. The Christmas lights strung up around the room represented the stars she would often look at, Future and fate as she did so. Her English doll collection sat around the room, As Drucilla herself sat in bed clutching her favorite doll, whispering to it frantically. Gingerly sitting down on the edge of the bed, he spoke Drucilla in soft tones. “Ah poppet? Did the star say something nasty? Do I need to go kill a few minions or something?”

“Oh, Spiky! Fate itself has turned against us. The Present itself is now helping Kitten. No rhyme, no reason, No time, no season. A dungeon. A mountain. So lonely. So holy it shall draw us in like a siren song, and then scald us to death! Burning, ripping, cutting and tearing, until we're not but ashes on the wind.”

“Kitten? Ah, you mean Droopy? The Slayers Little Pet Hanger on? You can't possibly think he's a threat now, can you luv?”

Her eyes unfocused, Drucilla replied, “Kitten has gained fangs of iron and claws of lead. His growl is that of a gun bark, and Sigil that of the White Rose. He's less a kitten and more of a tiger now.”

Grinning confidently, Spike replied, “Well then I guess it's time to go tiger hunting. I'll gather up the boys and we'll start hunting. Don't worry your pretty little head luv. We'll kill this tiger before he gets his taste for vampire ash,” Giving his sire and lover an affectionate pat on the arm, Spike left the room before hollering and gathering up his minions for a massive hunt.

Yet Drusilla just shook her head, “You don't understand, Spike. Kittens do not stay kittens for long, he isn’t the same beast you know anymore. If you try to hunt him… He's going to eat you all up.”

Xander, Belldany, and Rokuko were currently on the outskirts of Sunnydale. In all honesty, Xander should be in school right now, but… Well he was currently suspended.  He also  felt he had more important things to do. Like setting up his Dungeon. The trio came upon the old Calyx factory that his mother had admitted to owning just this morning. “What are we doing here anyway, Xander?” Rokuro asked, once the building was now in sight.

“Picking up materials for our dungeon,” The gunslinger replied. “There's plenty of scrap here we can use, as well as what I think counts as some special material.” Giving the rusted padlock and chain a sharp kick, They shattered and he walked inside. “Come on, you'll see what I mean once we're inside.”

‘There's plenty of iron in here, lots of metal. We could possibly summon some Holy Automatons… Rokuko noted before her eyes swept over something that made her pause. “What the Hell’s is that?” She said, pointing to the corpse of some sort of demonically possessed Cyborg that was thankfully inert. She could still feel the negative energy wafting off of it.

“I told you this place would have some special material, didn't I?” He walked over and gave the mechanical corpse a sharp kick. “This is the corpse of the demon Moloch.Who at one point we defeated. When he built himself a cybernetic body and actually took over the Internet.”

“Oh my goodness, that must have been quite the adventure,” Belldandy said as she covered her mouth in surprise.

Scoffing and shaking his head, Xander replied with, “You have no idea, Bell. What's worse, is he tricked Willow into thinking he liked her. The scumbag,” Turning to Rokuko, he asked. Well, Rou, what do you think? This guy’s corpse worth anything?”

“I can give it a try, Xander,” Roukuro replied as she slowly approached the inert body of Moloch. The moment she touched the corpse, it was sucked into her being, And a screen popped up in front of Xander stating the following.

[Demonic Infused Steel +1000 units. Unique Soul of Demon (Fallen God)  Moloch +1.]

“Huh. That's neat. Didn't know this was a thing.”

“Since you are the Dungeon Master, you have control of various functions  relating to the dungeon,” Rokuko explained to him. “That includes, creating weapons, floors, monsters, maintaining and buying supplies. Creating monsters and other such things.”

“Well, since we're creating a Holy Dungeon, we can just sell this Demonic Infused Steel and Soul of Moloch, right?”

Rokuro hummed for a moment, “I'm not sure. We might need it for recipes or something later on. As for the soul… Well, you could hang on to it for now, and possibly stick it into a monster. It would become an obedient puppet for us.”

Grinned maliciously before laughing, “I like the sound of that. Getting some payback on this guy,” He then looked around before asking, “Anything else we can use around here, Rokuko?”

The Living Dungeon Core nodded enthusiastically, “Oh yeah! There's tons of iron and stone and metal. We could strip this place down to its very foundations and have a ton of material to work with.”

That's what Xander liked to hear, “Let's do that then. Do you need to go outside in order to strip this place down to its foundations? Is it going to take a while or?”

“I could probably just disassemble the entire building if I touch it from the outside,” Rokuko said honestly.

Let's do that then, unless anyone  has any objections? I personally don't. Bell, you got a problem with us disassembling an entire building?”

The Goddess shook her head, “No, though I do wonder if people will notice the building missing or not?”

That stopped both the Gunslinger and Dungeon Core cold. They hadn’t thought of that. Xander scratched the back of his head sheepishly, “Dang didn’t think of that, nice catch Bell. Hmm… you can manipulate wind right? You and Holly I mean?”

Belldandy nodded, “Oh yes! What do you have in mind?”

“Well… I was wondering if you could just… knock the building over with a tornado or something?” Xander asked before coughing into his hand, “You know what, nevermind, that’s a dumb idea. Forget that I even asked.”

But the Norn of the Present just shook her head and serenely replied, “I can do that, it's not a problem. It would seem like a natural occurrence and no one would question it. A fine idea Alexander. Let’s head outside and I’ll do it right now. So Rokuko can work on collecting the remains.”

The Gunslinger and the Dungeon Core shared a look before shrugging and heading outside. They stood a ways back and watched as the goddess and her angel began to sing. For a minute, nothing happened. Then the wind picked up. First it was a gust, then a breeze, before either core or master knew,  it started kicking up rocks and dust as it became a gale force wind that was directed at the Calix Factory. In what seemed like no time at all, the steel and concrete caved and toppled like a house of cards, and all that was left was a heap of rubble.

The two just stared at the goddess in shock. “There we go! Now Roukuko can clean up!” Belldandy said in a satisfied tone.

“Bell, remind me never to piss you or Holly off… ever,” Xander said in awed tone upon seeing how easily she toppled a building.

The Goddess just smiled sweetly, “I don’t think you could ever make us angry Alexander.”

“We’re much too fond of you,” Holly teased with a playful wink, “Right Belldandy?”

“Holy Bell, please.” Belldandy pleaded with her angel to cease her teasing while flushing a bit.

From the rubble Rokuro called, “Hey! Stop flirting and help me out down here! Some of these stones are in the way!”

The Gunslinger, Angel, and Goddess laughed, “Coming Rokuko!” Xander called. Making a Dungeon was more labor intensive than he thought.

(...)

Once they got the materials sorted out, Xander and co needed to find a good location to place the Dungeon. “Somewhere on holy ground would be ideal, because holy dungeon.” Xander thought aloud. “But all the churches on main St. are actually occupied as still functioning churches. So the Dungeon itself would have to be placed a bit more out of the way than I’d like.”

Rokuko just laughed, “that doesn’t matter at all! You think the monsters in this town won’t be drawn to a place as holy as our dungeon, seeking to defile it?”

“Point,” Xander agreed. “So we just need to find an abandoned church… We’ve got our pick of the litter. There a dime a dozen in Sunnydale. Well I mean there is the church where the master was trapped? Would that work Rokuko?”

“Hmm I mean if it was used beforehand to seal a vampire of master rank or higher we could transform it into a beacon that especially attracts weaker willed vampires and other blood suckers. Though be warned stronger vampires or heaven forbid one of the lords of hell may gain an interest in the dungeon.”

Xander rubbed his hands together in sadistic glee. “It’s all coming together. Let’s do it!”

The trio made their way to the old church, and Rokuko quicking set up an area with a glass sphere the size of Xander’s head in the center. “This,” she said pointing at it, “Is the actual Dungeon Core. It’s my true body I guess you could say, if this gets destroyed I die.”

“Well that’s not happening,” Xander said with a protective growl emanating from his throat, causing Rokuko to flush a bit at how protective he was being. “We’re gonna beef up the defenses right away. Can we increase the depth of the Dungeon?”

“Yes in the Dungeon Menu it costs 1000 Dungeon Points though and we have… none right now,” She said a bit glumly, physically sagging at the prospect.

Scratching the back of his head, Xander muttered, “Okay, so our first priority is to get Dungeon points… How do we do that besides waiting? Dungeon Menu.” He called out on a guess.

A menu popped up in front of his face.

Welcome New Dungeon Master!

This program will do the best of its ability to support and help you grow your dungeon. Do you require help in setting up defenses, gaining points, summoning monsters, or a tutorial package? All other questions are locked until you finish the tutorial please and thank you.”

“Yes?” Xander said aloud to no one in particular.

“Very well master. To proceed with this process you can simply ask for a layout.”

“Layout?”

A holographic style map appeared in front of everyone and showed that Xander was highlighted in white while everyone else was gray. Though Holy Bell and Belldandy were highlighted in gold. A small “?” appeared next to Belldandy, Holly, and Rokuko. There was also a “?” covering the dungeon core.

Xander thinking that he was supposed to click it, decided to click the question mark on Belldandy.

A small window of info on her appeared,

“Belldandy Norn of the Present, generates 2,000 Dungeon Points (DP) by being associated with the dungeon. Buff Generated: Increased Awareness, Increased Vitality, and Protection from Projectiles.”

Xander was surprised that Belldandy generated so many points and buffs. He decided to click the ? on Holly.

“Holy Bell, Angelic guardian of Belldandy, generates 1,500 DP daily, Buff generated: Increased Holy Damage, Increased Defense Against Unholy and Undead.”

Xander then clicked Rokuko and honestly was a little disappointed,

“ Lvl 1 Dungeon Core Rokuko, Produces 10 DP daily. Dungeon Core can level up by absorbing ambient energy. Hint: Dimensional Leakage of Hellmouth will increase Rokuko DP generation. Buff Generated: None at this time.”

Xander then  clicked the final ? mark and was downright surprised,

“Hellmouth Bulwark. Your fortress/ Dungeon is built directly on the Hellmouth. Thanks to this you can Double DP generation daily. WARNING: By selecting the Holy theme for your dungeon you are at risk of attracting demons, devils, vampires, undead, and all other beings of evil Alignment at a 200% increase.”

“Well as long as we have this dungeon core safeguarded we should be alright. The DP generation alone is outrageous. Thank goodness now about the rest of this tutorial,” stated Xander.

“To summon a monster to defend the dungeon just say summon menu.”

“Summon Menu?”

Another menu appeared in front of Xander he looked at the list of monsters to summon and most looked a little too evil or mischievous for his holy dungeon of all places. Also the prices were OUTRAGEOUS!

The Dungeon Menu wanted twenty dungeon points for one measly goblin? Highway robbery as far as Xander was concerned. ‘So by that logic how much is a Lantern Archon, Harbinger, or Hound?’ He searched them up and his jaw dropped.

One Lantern Archon cost 150 DP! Same for a single Harbinger Archon! A Hound Archon was 300 DP a piece. ‘Well I’m glad we’ve got Bell and Holly in the party, otherwise we’d never be able to afford any troops.’ Xander thought to himself.

Then he saw some semi cheap options.

Furrowing his brow in confusion Xander silently wondered, ‘What does it mean by ‘used’?’

Due to completing the Tutorial (Summoning) feel free to pick up to 100 DP of creatures to summon!

‘That's awfully nice of the tutorial.’ Xander thought to himself. ‘Where's the trap?’

“Traps are to be set up in the defense section of the tutorial and cost DP. They are also single use.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it… but if you're giving me free DP, who am I to not make use of it.” The Gunslinger said to himself as he bought the Halfling Fighter, and both of the ‘used’ religious folk, mostly because he wanted to figure out what ‘used’ meant.

There were three flashes of light and when they cleared, three people were standing in front of him. Two were gorgeous blondes wearing white and blue Nuns Habits. The older of the two was much more well endowed, and she had a black blindfold covering her eyes. Her staff, if it could be called that, was a sword with two weighted scales on the end. While the younger of the two was holding a monk Kakihara and seemed to be blinking in confusion and had a look of utter fear in her eyes. Standing in between the two women was a small, short young girl With Auburn hair, tied in a loose ponytail Held in place by a White Ribbon, wearing A metal breastplate, Carrying a wooden shield, and a small arming sword.

The petite blonde looked around, seeing the gunslinger in front of her. She asked rapidly and full of terror, “Where the goblins?! What happened to my party? Where? Where am I?”

“There aren't any goblins here,” Xander said, placatingly, As he gently held his hands out towards the girl. “You're safe from whatever the heck you were just in the middle of.”

The young girl took a breath, Which came out as half-sob before she said, “Thank the Earth Mother who saved me just in time. Can I have your name, kind Sir?”

“Xander. My friends call me Xander. But if you need my full name, it's Alexander Lavelle Harris Deschain.” He replied easily, the addition to his name coming off his lips as if he was born to it. “Anyway, what happened to you people?”

“I was adventuring with a party. It was my first time out and we got attacked by goblins… We didn't expect them to be that crafty, and were ill prepared to take them on.”

The older of the two sighed as if resigned.“A story I've heard far too often. Adventurers don't take goblins seriously, and this is the end result. I didn't take them seriously either, and it cost me.” Said this, her hand subconsciously moved towards her blindfold.

“That's horrible!” The halfling said, in utter shock. “But what are we doing here?”

“Right, introductions first. Like I said, I'm Xander. Who are all of you?”

“I'm Priestess. A porcelain rank adventurer.” The young holy woman introduced herself.

“I’m Sword Maiden, a retired gold rank adventurer and current leader of the Holy Church.”

“I'm Rhea Fighter, a porcelain rank adventurer.” The halfling boisterously introduced herself.

Xander quickly came to a conclusion, ‘Those are titles, not names.’ Clearing his throat? He asked, “What are your names? You've given me your titles and positions.”

The three women froze. As if this was something they'd never been asked before. Again, the youngest of the two was the first to speak. “Those are our names.  Where we come from, what you do and who you are are the same thing.”

Rubbing the back of his head at the awkwardness of this situation, the gunslinger told them, “OK, well, that's not how we do it around here. So I'll have to give you three names. Are you alright with that?”

The trio shared a glance, which Xander found quite impressive considering one of them was blind. Though he assumed and Sword Maiden's case anyway. After a moment, they nodded in sync and Priestess spoke for the three of them, “By all means, go ahead.”

Pointing at Priestess first, he said, “Theresa Le Magne.”

Upon being named, Priestess felt something swell up in her while she also felt something solidify within her own being as if she was less, but also more than what she once was. Yet she couldn’t help but ask, “Why that name?”

Xander just shrugged, “I dunno, it just seemed to suit you.” His gaze flicking over to Sword Maiden, He locked eyes with her moment, and he could almost feel her staring back, even though he knew that was impossible. After a moment's hesitation, he said, “Jeanne L’Arc.”

Much like Priestess before her, Sword Maiden felt something settle into her being upon being named. She smiled and dipped her head In acknowledgement and thanks. “My thanks to you, kind Sir. I shall do the name proud.”

“And last but not least,” Xander said under his breath as he had looked at the nervous haffling. “Marigold Hollyhand.”

“That's kind of a small name, isn't it?” The now named, Marigold said with a huff. “But that's fine, because I intend to become so big that nobody can ever make fun of me.”

“Welcome to the team, Mary.” Xander said by way of greeting. “Now I should let you know what we're actually doing here. We are forming A holy dungeon on top of a semi closed portal to hell. We're going to bring in every monster, spook, ghoul, and freak we can, and trap them in this place. Like flies to sugar. Then we're going to kill them. Any questions or objections to this plan?”

Therisa raised a hand, “I have several questions. How are we, who are very weak adventurers not counting Sword Maiden… Excuse me, Jeanne L’Arc., supposed to do this? Both Marigold and I are only porcelain rank adventurers. We're hardly a match for goblins, much less anything else on this, Hellmouth you called it?”

“This is a dungeon, Theresa. We get stronger as it kills things. There's more than one way to kill things in a dungeon other than just monsters and stuff in it. We can set traps, create pitfalls, just make the environment deadly to the people who enter it.”

The adventurers  nodded at the reasoning showing understanding, “Oh, that makes sense,” A pause before. Theresa said, “Wait, are we monsters in this dungeon?”

“Well, actually, yeah. This is a holy dungeon, and you can't get much more holy than two priestesses. Why is that a problem?”

“I feel icky.” Theresa said sullenly. “It’s like I’ve been turned into a goblin or something.”

In response, Xander empathetically shook his head, “No, no, no. Don't think of it like that. Think of it like this dungeon being a giant trap for the real monsters. It lowers them in, and then it eats them. And we get stronger for it. We're really doing a civil service, if you think about it logically.”

“Really? You wouldn't lie to us about this, would you?” Theresa asked, clearly wanting to believe him. But she was obviously on the fence.

Xander held his hand over his heart, “Really. Really. I mean, I know I kind of just dragged you all out from whatever you were doing and into this situation without asking, but I'm not going to lie about something like this. I hate most monsters.” He then added, “If you don't trust me, then just ask Belldandy.” He thumbed behind him at the literal goddess, who waved and smiled happily at the new additions to the dungeon.

“Hello, it's nice to meet you all. Would you like some tea? Should I go make some tea to greet our new arrivals Xander?”

Laughing a bit to himself, the gunslinger replied, “Sure, Bell, go make some tea. That is, if you can find a teapot and some leaves around here somewhere.”

Giving her contractee, a reassuring smile, the goddess replied, “I'm sure I can manage somehow. Please wait a moment while I go make refreshments.”

Now it was Jeanne's turn to be gobsmacked, “That she… A literal goddess. In the mortal realm? How?”

“I have a way with women,” Xander replied sufficiently, Before continuing. “That said, are you going to help me with this dungeon problem or?”

Mary just shrugged, “Well, it's not like you can send us back, so why not? You've got my sword.” The halfling said, drawing her blade and presenting it towards him, hilt first.

“And my staff,” Theresa added, Presenting hi the wooden haft of her weapon.

Sword Maiden hesitated for just a moment, Before adding, “I'm not sure how much help I'll be, but you have my assistance as well,” She presented him with her bladed staff.

Xander clapped his hands together. He had the beginnings of a crew, “All right people, then let's get to work. We have a dungeon to build.”

Belldandy appeared just then with drinks. And Xander proposed a toast. “To the dungeon. To our fruitful ventures together.”

“To the dungeon!” Everyone toasted. All of them knew that this was the start of something big.

This is the unedited chapter. I haven't had either of my editor's look it over and polish. I will fix the mistakes you mentioned though.

Xander's name changed at least 3 times near the end. At one point it was Zander, then Xander again, then Sander. That was a weird autocorrect. Did you try running this through grammarly or chatgpt to correct it or something?
