Ask Christine Lagarde at the European Youth Event, May 2020

Young Europeans asked President Lagarde their questions on the ECB’s response to the coronavirus pandemic emergency in an online youth dialogue. The event was organised together with the European Parliament as part of the European Youth Event 2020 and took place today, on 27 May 2020.

Participants also sent questions about their concerns for their careers, the future of Europe, digitalisation and climate change.

Speaking about ECB's evaluation of the economy Christine Lagarde explained that they had set out three possible scenarios and it's now seeming like the mild scenario is no longer relevant.

Further topics describing the role of ECB:

ECB has delivered liquidity to the system so that it could flow
Provided as much financing as possible / credit flow throughout the economy
Has taken care of ECB monetary policy (price stability objection) and this was channeled and throughout the Euro area
In cooporation with all central banks of the world it was made sure that there was access to the currencies most in demand. There was a "dash for cash", everybody wanted as much liquid assets as possible, for cash. There is always dash for dollar and euro.
On the future of young people: Young Europeans have to prepare themselves for change. "We will all train over the course of time, we will acquire new skill sets, new tools. We will transform ourselves and we have to just get ready for that."
