Houska's Gap | La Brecha de Houska [Hasiel]

There are biblical traditions, portrayed from antiquity, that saw the fall of God's emissaries, kings, empires and dynasties. But this one... this one would never be recounted because after it, there would be no one left to do it.

Hasiel had always felt different. He had lived knowing that and waiting for things to somehow miraculously change. A waiting that eventually turned to frustration and, finally, to acceptance. For some of his people, his way of thinking was too pragmatic and detached from tradition. His suggestions to apply magic to human inventions had been rejected to such an extent that he had become an outcast.

He hadn't needed to be involved in a betrayal, nor a scandal with a demon to always be the discordant piece that was out of tune with the general tapestry. He had learned the hard way that having an opinion was not a good thing and that small tasks were better than standing out. He had never thought of himself as a shy creature, but as time went on he became more and more closed in on himself.

Within his faction he explored magic, even that which other angels were forbidden to do. He also discovered some secrets that he was not allowed to talk about, since all use of magic was essentially the same. It made no difference whether it was a personal sacrifice or a selfish one. Which made angels and demons more than just opposites, but alike. Perhaps because of all this, when Zihel came into his life it wasn't something he rejected as much as he should have.

He knew the theory and he knew it was dangerous, but he was the only one who, in his own way, had looked at him as he was. He had hated himself even more for developing these feelings, for cultivating them and for imagining fictional scenarios. Where had his rationalism gone? Was he so destructive as to do this to himself?

The demon learned to play his cards. He paid attention to details. He took advantage of his insecurities and turned them into taunts that were no longer able to touch him. It could also guess his movements, where he liked and how. Hasiel understood many things about himself. Especially the bad ones. His way of loving, or perhaps, the way of love he thought he deserved. Because if one thing was clear, it was that there was hate, but there was also love, and he wasn't always able to distinguish when one began and the other ended.

He had always been suspicious of his intentions. That warning voice was there, waiting to whisper to him to be on guard. Sometimes, he told himself, he would be prepared, and sometimes, instead, it was just his head trying to sabotage him in the one thing that made him feel something. And yet, there was no preparation possible for something like this, the betrayal was like a wave that came and washed everything away.

It swept away his hope, his confidence in himself and in others, his will to continue fighting. He took every punishment and paid penance. But the hatred did not dissolve, it remained at the bottom of his stomach, acidic and recalcitrant, threatening to destroy his insides from the inside. And slowly, an idea formed in his head. A reckless, destructive and terribly stupid idea, but one that wouldn't leave him.

He dreamed of his revenge, chewed the satisfaction of seeing his enemy defeated and pleading. He researched, he practised. He grew smarter, but also more twisted. He aspired to try something no one had ever tried before. No one had ever been insane enough to want to send someone back to hell. If anyone distrusted his research, they never said so out loud, mostly because it was impossible to achieve.

He had to accumulate power in sacred stones, as his energy would not be enough to complete his enterprise. He kept them in a storeroom in the library where no one else had access to them. He had to learn to manipulate different types of magic. He had to change the environment physically, but also to connect two places that were not there, tearing the veil of reality. Equally, it had to be closed afterwards. There were too many possibilities for everything to go wrong and end badly, and that did not discourage him. In a way, if it all ended, he was fine with that too.

He was no longer a victim. He could look the one who had hurt him in the face and get back at him. Could he? Doubts began to creep in. Especially when he saw his smug bully face again. So cocky, such a jerk, so... wretched. His strength failed him. Hating from a distance was a much easier thing to do than in close proximity. His heart turned into a little ball of emotions and everything that had been so clear for so long was no longer clear. It was not going to rid the world of an evil, it was not going to make his situation better, and it certainly would not mend the wound of his betrayal.

Although his little enterprise did not come to fruition, a trace of magic was left in the soil. Like a seed planted in fertile soil. A seed that would herald the end of one era and any other.
