If you wake up one day after a dream and realize you were raped 7 years ago, you better start by questioning your own memory and the reason of this sudden awakening.
There was a movement in Psychology that encouraged patients to reflect on their childhood until they found something wrong that would explain their current pains. Thousands of adults suddenly 'discovered' they were abused by their parents... Well it turned out that in most cases it never happened and memories were fabricated, but it was too late once they convinced themselves.
The most extreme case was a guy in Switzerland called Binjamin Wilkomirski who was adopted when he was very young. He grew up reading stories about the Holocaust. He got obsessed with it and had terrible nightmares. It even affected his health. One day he visited a concentration camp and everything clicked: he realized he had been there when he was a kid. He started remembering and wrote his own memories surviving the Holocaust. Until a Journalist checked the story and realized it was pure fiction. He was never there but he felt that way, even his health was affected by this fantasy.
Another relatively common case of memory fabrication is people perfectly normal who one day wake up and claim having being abducted by aliens during the night. People used to take them for looneys seeking attention till scientists looked into it and discovered a link with sleep paralysis.
