Anger - The most selfish emotion?

I'm concerned about the growing anger in society. I don't know if it has always been this bad but all the violence and mass shootings in western countries is very concerning.

It seems to me as though a lot of anger comes from feeling as though you're not succeeding. I further believe that this feeling is fed by media, both traditional and social. Never before have we seen the success of other people so in our face. When life isn't glamorous and successful, filled with money and friends, it's easy to feel like there is something wrong with us, especially when everyone else seems to be doing so well.

But what really interests me is how morals can change when under intense emotional pressure. While life is going well, you feel compassionate and kind to other people. However, when you are failing and filled with anger, you don't care about them at all. They can even become the object of your hate.

When you're in the grips of anger, it seems as though your most selfish instincts can come out. Perhaps this is why some people are terrified to get in touch with their own anger, in case they are forced to confront the selfish instincts they would rather keep hidden..

I think the media is giving us the impression that we are getting angrier. Steven Pinker wrote an interesting book Better Angels of our nature, explaining how world overall has become a less violent place then in the past.I suppose that doesn't mean that people aren't walking around angry or suppressing their anger?
