Wow. That's a really good observation and analogy. What can a man do to protect himself? I think Alexander is right, but not everyone is good at guaging if someone else is a high quality person, especially if they're on their own journey of growth and self discovery. A good litmus test is her willingness to talk openly about her birth control method, which specific method she chose and why, how can you share that responsibility (reminders at a certain time of day, packing pills before overnights and trips) and an open discussion about what you will do IF the birth control fails to prevent pregnancy. And even then... wear a condom until you are confident in the relationship and your ability to manage the consequences if she should get pregnant and choose to raise the baby. If she's caging, shifty, confrontational or dismissive, do you really want to bet your future on her morals and responsibility?

I know several men in their 40s who thought their diaper days were over who suddenly found themselves back in the delivery room. I think the wall may be an important factor in those pregnancies. For younger couples I think there's often a fear by the women that her boyfriend might leave her, or won't commit to a serious relationship or marriage.
