“Reasons I want to be American”: conservative values “Reason I don’t want to be American”: liberal values

How do you define religion? I agree that some people have big faith on socialism, im the sense of having certainties unbased on actual facts, etc. But let's not forget that other people have similar faith in (extreme forms of, unregulated) free market. Lack of critical thinking is not the exclusivity of the Left, although it still amazes me that some people still advocate some classic forms of communism after all the historic evidence we now have. Heck some people have even unlimited faith in some scientific theories (ironically, that goes against basic scientific principles). On that topic, I highly recommend this video on the discoverer of quasi-crystals. Long story short: quasi-crystals break the common crystallography theory. Upon reaching this inconsistency, the discoverer's boss refused to question the classic theory and started treating the discoverer as a conspirationist. Turned out that he was right, though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2GqU6fdjeQ

• With regards to the imperial system...the only downside is women want a man who is "6 foot". There is something about that round number that they like, even though it is essentially arbitrary. I am a graphic designer and design ads, whereby paying attention to measurements is a thing. I also have done a bunch of work on a couple of houses that I have owned, which requires the measuring tape, and I have had reason to use socket wrenches. Some bolts are in Imperial Units. Some are in Metric. You just go with it. Just last night, I helped a friend with a plumbing issue that required a socket wrench. My friend has their own socket set and I asked they had one that better fit the bolt. They brought me their set, and yes, they had a metric and imperial swapped. I knew what I was looking for, but it took me about ten seconds to sort it out, mostly because it was hard to read the sizes on the sides of the nuts. Meh. It is how things are. I don't see it changing. • I agree completely about the education system. • With regards to religion, it really isn't that bad. I am a deist, so I am always in the minority. People either have the religion of religion, or the religion of socialism. Religion can be annoying, but it is far better for people to know that they have a religion. Socialists have a religion of the state, they take so much on blind faith, but they don't think of it as religion. With regards to your difficulty with the creationist, it is just a different kind of conversation. Some people know how to handle it and a bunch just avoid it. Meh. There are definitely different levels of religiousness. I could talk for hours about that. You were in one of the more religious areas. A lot of religious people might be assholes about pushing their religion and they may support certain positions in politics for "moral reasons", like the war on drugs. But you don't have to worry about them doing you any harm beyond certain bad policies. And in that department they are definitely better than socialists. • I agree completely about the border situation. • BTW I live in the mountains of Virginia. Should you ever be in America I would be happy to put you up for a week.

I believe America and Americans in general command respect because they are just that accomplished. So much so that anyone with aspirations will end up working with Americans in some way. There is no way around it.

The main reason I wouldn't want to live in America is the cars (obviously I'm talking about suburban America here). This YouTube channel, Not Just Bikes, has made some fantastic videos about it. I'm pretty sure Australia has the same problem with the car culture obsession. One of the main reasons it's bad is it's anti-child. Due to the fact houses are so spread out in America it means children can't interact with each other without their parents to drive them. Which leads to a lot of them staying at home with no one to talk to. This stifles the children's mental development. When you combine this with America's gun culture, as the children grow up a disproportionate amount commit shootings compared to other countries. No wonder why they say there are so many crazy people in America.
