I think it's because the nailing the door shut feels more like their flippant, unthinking evil, whereas this is planned out. Like someone who plans out an elaborate murder of one person vs someone who drives drunk and hits a group of people. It's the motive.

Nailing a door shut to a burning apartment full of people is probably worse, but this hits harder for some reason, maybe because the other one is so over the top, you assume everyone is mostly fine (minus cricket, but he's not a real person)
