This is what I'd consider to be a "high-level lesson", even though I don't talk an ounce of music theory! It gets way into personal opinion here on composing, but I'd be betraying my ethics to not share how I actually work with melodic concepts.
It's about art, and art can't be easily boiled down to paint-by-numbers rules. It gets abstract, and that's what this first lesson on melody is all about. Taking ourselves OUT of the world of notes and into the world of story+emotion+meaning. This is just a primer for the "meatier" parts of melodic composition, but those lessons are pointless without a good foundation of what we're trying to do. Part 2 will be more theory based, and will include concrete melodic concepts; tried and true techniques and structures that are helpful to remember.
In part 3, I'll demonstrate two ways of writing- starting with chords first, then writing melodies, OR starting with a melody first, then writing a chord progression. I'll also include some more abstract elements in this final lesson.
Expect part 2 next week (7/31) and part 3 the following friday. And here's the link to the Kurt Vonnegut video that EVERY ARTIST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP3c1h8v2ZQ
See you soon!
