Diving into the Wreckage Ep1

A new special collaboration series for VarnVlog and Antifada patrons featuring Sean and C. Derrick Varn. In this first episode we tackle to outlines of the present moment: what is the state of geopolitics? How does China fit into the world system? What is the state of American decline? How is US politics reflecting this decadence? What do the Democrats and Republicans stand for at the present moment, if anything? And more!

This will be an ongoing collaboration so there will be more episodes soon. In the meantime, be sure to check out Varn's work:

At about 1h27m Into the Diving into Wreckage 1 podcast Varn and Sean talk about the productivity in manufacturing gains making it stable. If I am not mistaken, I believe recent research(linked below) argues that this is a product of computer/electronics manufacturing getting spun up so quick its basically an anomaly that shows up globally, and is itself reflective of a basically stagnate sector relative to the world economy. They identify trade as the cause for job loss beginning in 2006. So in terms of like the physical MoP its still basically a gutting. No strong signs that automation has been worth jack all. Not sure if that is all tangential to the point of manufacturing not being profitable enough to resolve the inability to shit asset inflation out with high enough paying factory jobs. I guess I am not sure if, given the above, protectionist trade policies for MFG are analytically the same as YOLOBIGBUX MMT or not. Anyways thanks for doing a good leftist economics show. I came across that article listening to Russ Roberts 2 years,l ago, so Sean is a big step up in quality. Paper: if anyone is a MathChad overtherr https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3192862 Ecotalk Podcast (pretty good break down of material production factors and statistical complications of productivity estimates) https://www.econtalk.org/susan-houseman-on-manufacturing/

I don’t think Greece, a country that doesn’t control its own currency is a counterpoint to mmt

Gabo Goff

Defund the police also expands a carceral social services program.

I think you guys understated Han Chinese settler-colonialism against the Uyghurs of Xinjiang.

Steve Shales

The end is them jus saying the ideas of a society are good he ideas of the ruling class bingo great way to tie it

Kevin Kerby

I liked this show. It was very focused on the US, and I think a forthcoming show on climate would be a good opportunity to develop internationalist perspective.

JBP

He said inward looking again!

This is great stuff. I'm excited about the next installment
