Diving into the Wreckage 2, "Fossil Capital" w/ C. Derrick Varn

The long-awaited second installment of Diving Into The Wreckage, the VarnVlog/Antifada crossover series is here! This time, Sean and Derrick put on their doomer caps to discuss capitalism and global warming: Is there a way out within this mode of production? Why have emissions ramped up so much in our lifetimes? What kind of political forces make climate change so intractable? And what does the future look like if we keep going down this path?

Really great book

Jory

I like that varns awkward & annoying tho he has annoying teacher & professor habits, but I like that he’s at least *trying* to reference more primary sources in podcast/vlog/zoom class room format such as it is. It’s a little weirdly dissonant tho, as I often don’t use podcasts for news, entertainment or music entirely…they’re sort of a talk radio/infotainment chatter where it’s hard to be a passive radio listener that’s maybe a gateway drug for other things idk? & he does engage with people in ways that are in practice nuanced w/o always smothering them…idk if he’s pro mod or anti mod or what?

So there’s all this talk about fossil capital, what’s good reading about disappearance of clean (fresh partly) water & lack of (waste or drinking) water privatization in Japan but yes in Cuba? I’ve been reading all I can find about it or even the ‘it’s nobody’s fault seemingly’ & the water source reliability & cleanliness gets worse despite best of intentions & no documents or anyone telling the story seems to have an incentive to lie, cover up or take a side for their own individual benefit.

Fantastic Ep thank you guys

Have either of you come across the work of Jason W Moore? https://jasonwmoore.com/ https://cosmonautmag.com/2021/10/the-world-ecology-capitalism-and-nature-with-jason-moore/ I haven't read capitalism in the web of life, I have read a history of the world in seven cheap things. I know he's focused a lot of critique on fossil Capital and wants to situate the origins of the climate crisis and capitalism in 16th century colonial expansion, not in industrial Britain
