E261 - Histadrut is a Weapon

NEWS ep! We talk about Sean's upcoming well-deserved Alaska vacation before shifting into some preliminary analysis on Israel's brief anti-Netanyahu general strike, the contradictions of the Israeli working-class and war economy, and the legacy of labor Zionism.

In the second half we talk about AfD's victory in Thuringia and the meaning of the cleavages within neoliberalism, including Brazil banning Twitter and the absence of left partisanship in free-speech discourse.

Karen Black is a deep cut. If you're in Anchorage go see if Darwin's theory is still open. Drink a bud for me.

From the title I thought maybe Christman was back

Is there a website for the ILC. Google gets me nothing.

Download an Aurora tracker app if you really want to see it, it’ll tell you if there’s a good chance any given night.

Aurora is year round but with all the extra sun in the summer it’s not visible. It should be now though it’s a lot more visible in deep winter. Very few Inuits are orthodox (a few Yupiks are), there’s a mix of Mormons and evangelicals versus a renaissance of native spirituality and beliefs, but there’s a beautiful 19th century Orthodox Church in Kenai, which might not be far from a glacier cruise. My understanding after living there is Alaska became a state in part because of oil and growing military importance after WW2, and in part to defuse accusations against the US from having a big non-self governing territory amidst global decolonization. Enjoy the salmon!

Revolutionary JD Vance lol

i did not intend to compare rikers to gaza in the sense of drawing equivalence. the point was that NYC and the US has its own daily atrocities that demand action

The Antifada

Never apologise for pointing to the only way out! Much respect for your sober appraisal of the present nightmare.

daytorn

yeah proletarian internationalism is where I draw the line, too

I’ll admit I stopped listening to your show for a while after the time when you guys compared Gaza to Riker’s Island. I think Palestine is still an area of growth for this show overall, but IMO in this episode you’re getting closer to the mark by (almost?) recognizing that focusing on building the left within a fascist/exterminationist settler colonial ethnostate is probably not a viable path.

Alaska is gorgeous as hell, would have never gone if not for a friend getting married there and I'm so glad I spent some time after it was done to travel around a little. Enjoy!!

Major reason for levying taxes is non to fund the government. Is basically deflationairy policy

Taz

Sean you should check Donald Harris writings. He has written about time and labor relation

Taz

Hope you have fun in Alaska ! our leaves just started turning so it should be chilly but very beautiful when you come up (also, you can see the northern lights any time of year ! its just easier in the winter months because its so dark and the atmosphere is so thin)

I’d love to learn more about Labor Zionism- particularly within a larger trajectory of national syndicalism and Marxist Revisionism. I feel like Georges Sorel would’ve loved Israel (except for the inconvenient fact that he was an antisemite.) Re AfD and Meloni- the one point of division that I see in the European far right is their stance on NATO and the Ukraine war. An element of AfD successes has been the opposition to German participation in the Ukraine war. They likely benefited from the Nordstream bombing scandal (nationalism feeds on wounded pride, and even anti-nationalists can understand how humiliating it is to spend billions for an “ally” who destroyed a key part of your energy infrastructure.) Meloni is “acceptable” because she’s Atlanticist. I suspect the AfD will face more headwinds for its positions on Ukraine and Russia.
