Unfilmable 40: The Descent

You can steer clear of a lot of problems by staying above ground. In fact, there are few reasons to go down there. Few reasons worth dealing with the CHUDS for, anyway. Someone should have told that to these thrill-seeking ladies, looking to do some spelunking after their friend suffers a tragic loss.

The Descent is one of the scariest movies out there, even before the monsters show up. But the monsters aren't entirely pointless... they're effective on their own and they drive the incident. This isn't a perfect movie, but it frequently had moments that flirt with perfection.

When I saw this movie, it had the original UK ending and I rember how unnerved I felt at the end. Truly my worst nightmare, being left in a cave with no way out. It made me hate Juno even more because ethe whole movie was her fault. I had no idea that there even was another version of the ending where Sarah lives until this podcast episode.

i know this episode is a year and a half old but "milked to completion" is the funniest thing in the world to me rn

bee !!

I can't believe I didn't realize this was the same director as Dog Soldiers, a movie that I absolutely love, watch several times a year, and is the quintessential hidden gem. It's fun, a good time, very atmospheric, and does a pretty darn good job with practical effects and werewolves. I recommend it to anyone seeking a good werewolve flick, and I'm immensly dissapointed that "Burial" was not a spiritual successor to it.

My wife and I watched this after watching this Jacob Geller video and we're both fully terrified of caves now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MOKTU9tCbw

Parts of this movie made me very queezy.

Really big Descent fan here, but oh man, I wouldn’t touch Descent 2 (again) with a 10 ft copper pipe. Once was more than enough. Once was too much. I’m now super curious if you have already covered (or will cover in the future) Old Boy.

I just found the next film "Ready or Not" UHD is on sale for $5 on Prime Video! Looking forward to being ready for the next episode.

I would strongly recommend Dog Soldiers for the show. Its not perfect, but much better than any film about soldiers being stalked by a werewolf family should be

The Descent was my gateway movie into being a horror fan. I had seen the "classics" growing up (e.g. Exorcist, Omen, Poltergeist, etc.) but I always assumed that they were "the good ones" and that almost everything else in horror, including anything new, was "garbage." I had seen previews for The Descent and I wrote it off as "just another dumb horror movie." Whenever I finally watched it with friends, I realized how wrong I had been, because I had never expected a horror movie to be as cool and smart and anxiety-inducing as The Descent was. It's opened a lot of doors for me since, and I regret being so prejudiced toward this genre.

Kole fucking nailed it! I went to check out the blood pit scene on youtube and the first comment is someone saying it was a "Metaphorical rebirth".

Quickly becoming one of my favorite duckfeed series!

BAAAAAARNES

I love this show. You should both watch Scream.

Genuine laugh out loud at the idea of the replace-the-CHUDs-with-copper pipes mod hack. Might have been my favourite Unfilmable episode yet

I love this show, please do more than one a month

Michael Andrew

i had completely forgotten this movie tried to do the monster-as-metaphor-for-trauma schtick.

Billiam

Please do Dog Soldiers 😬

Morgan

watched this while very high and was very scared!!

Thanks for putting the lyrics "If you wanna be spelunkers, you gotta get with my friends" in my brain.

I’ve seen the sequel! Two best (worst) notes, the main character now canonically got out of the caves via… a fucking mine shaft?? Okay? And that’s also how the new crew gets into the chud cave. Also, they got rid of the natural/ambient lighting and it is hilarious how they decided to get rid of one of the film’s biggest selling points

I think Gary accidentally wrote one of those 1 sentence horror stories: "Haunted house volunteers."

Stephen Sloan

I watched this for the show a couple of weeks ago. I like the nudey Nosferatu goblins.
