Bonfireside Chat 216: Liurnia of the Lakes, West

This week we head to the western reaches of Liurnia of the Lakes, witnessing with our own eyes the atrocious acts committed against the Village of the Albinaurics. We then head up the western coast, learning what happened to Edgar, the warden of Castle Morne.

Probably know this now. But Omen killers are Perfumers

Aw, thanks Sean!

You guys are awesome. I wish more of my fav games had companion podcasts like this! I’ve just bought Baldur’s Gate 3 so another set of podcasts from you guys for me to dig in to. Happy days! Thanks guys 👍

47:20 Oh yea let people play the game how they like unless they like pvp. What a weird thing to get upset about. You were so defensive of afk farmers in another episode too. They're literally not playing the game, that's the issue

Something that confused me about the Albenauric village, is that there are many commoner bodies among the Albenaurics. It made me thing that a revolt had taken place, so I was even more confused when characters mentioned a "massacre"

Nathaniel De La Cruz

Fun fact, at the Converted Tower that requires the Erudition gesture to get to the top, if you don't happen to have the gesture yet there's actually a crumbling wall around the tower you can jump up to skip the puzzle entirely

Bryan Bronstein

I know this is too often the way with these games, but I agree - it's not obvious what's happening or what you're meant to do at all

i completely missed her appearance at the albanauric village on my first playthrough, her story functionally ended with me finding her wigging out in Roundtable. the lacunae in her questline even after it got patched is really weird, feels like there are steps missing

yeah omen/crucible shit is some of my favorite lore in this game, i love how it intersects with theories about the prince of death and the golden order being an invasive presence. Elden Ring does the 50 car lore pileup so much better than ANY of the souls games did, imho

sleepysmiles

Did anyone else get a bit confused speaking to Nepheli the first time you come across her at the Village? It wasn't obvious to me that the massacre had taken place there and then because she's kind of at the entrance to the place, and it's dark, and well... it's not like dead bodies aren't strewn around Souls games willy nilly anyway. Perhaps also the first time I played, I didn't have a lantern or torch by that point, only in my second playthrough. So it was only on second game that I realised she's actually standing next to a big old pile of dead Albinaurics. Come to think of it, the first time I got there, I didn't see the hill going up to the Omenkiller. I just crossed the rope bridge, got to a dead end and noped out

interesting to hear yall say the crucible/omen are underdeveloped, to me theyre one of the most interesting parts of the whole lore and key to understanding a lot of the overall themes around the erdtree as a colonizing force. the barebones is that the crucible was the order that existed before the erdtree, and the "omen" are explicitly remnants of that force cropping up that are shunned and exiled by the golden order to maintain its hegemony. thats why theyre called omen, as propaganda. i'll save the 10 paragraph dissertation obv but theres a lot more concrete stuff in there than just speculation thats worth looking deeper into when yall get to the later areas esp the shunning grounds and morgott/mohg. and it also ties into what makes the dung eater quest interesting (his armor is actually meant to resemble the cut off horns of baby omen, not just gross cysts) not that im whining, definitely stand with yall on the avoiding heavy speculation, its just with the sheer volume of stuff in the game its easy for legitimately cool stuff to fall thru the cracks until like the 10th playthru lol. really loving the season overall keep up the good work!

It didn't occur to me that the Omen Killer was responsible for the Albinauric Village massacre, and always thought that was down to Ensha (which is his name, I believe, as Nepheli refers to him as such

Charlie Frame

I feel that the Crucible is somewhat just a concept as opposed to an "order" or anything like that. The fact that it's vague feels purposeful to me because it's drawing a comparison to the primordial soup more or less. The crucible knights, for example, use aspects of the crucible but they side with G*df*ey, who, at least to my knowledge, doesn't represent the Crucible

With regards to the end of Nepheli’s quest and the cut option to make Gostoc lord, it makes sense to me that he would be a back up to allow a conclusion for Kenneth’s quest if certain choices were made regarding Nephili and a character we haven’t met yet (not sure if the manor will be before or after Raya Lucaria).

Listening for an excuse to write a long comment about the sun. But seriously I love the content and I look forward to this each week, I was for the biweekly mode but I’m starting to get it. It’s like a TV show. Succession is over now I get to relive the great game I played in the winter.

I feel like I have to mention my favorite LMSH variant, which runs up to a wall in the game and uses the Mimic’s veil to disguise themselves. It’s called Let You Solo Her. 😅

Latenna is one of my favorite quests in the game. She activates for you in certain spots because she’s basically in a pokeball in your inventory and talks to you. I wish more spirit summons had quests for you to complete for them.
