Bonfireside Chat 256: Capital Outskirts

The Morgit refight is surprising, but does it... uh... actually add anything? All this and more in today's episode.

So about the jars… the flask of wonderous phisik says that urns used to be placed under the erdtree to collect it’s crystallized sap and so maybe these huge jars are a desperate attempt to collect the sap after the golden seeds flew off by the perfumers or whoever made the jars like collecting rainwater in buckets?

Re Margit, I guess I don't find it quite as incongruous as you guys. He's the current ruler and defender of Leyndell and, unlike the other shardbearers, he's both possessed of his full faculties and aware of you from earlier in the game. So to me it kind of makes sense that he'd appear and have a pop at you when you're snooping around the city he's ruling from a lore perspective. Actually makes less sense to me from a design perspective.

Great episode as always! Regarding the crab the first thing I thought of was a crab shaped creature made out of the bones of another animal or people. I am thinking like a crab shaped bone golem. Then it could visually look both very crablike and skeletal. I am glad dino damage has entered the lexicon on the regular as I gave my daughter a bunch of my old toys and one of them is definitely the Jurassic Park T-Rex with an exposed ribcage. Oh the memories!

The Erdtree as parasite idea goes up and down in popularity, but there's definitely something going on with people feeding them corpses and blood.

I think the Margit Capitol outskirts fight serves to 1) Give you a chance to see how much more badass you are now vs when you were low level and fought this guy. 2) Makes the Morgot reveal more of a moment because it’s like “THIS guy again??”

Also, Winged Crystal Tear is definitely useful, though I would say mostly for bosses only. It’s a 450% buff to equip load, so you can carry heavy weapons and armor while easily maintaining a light roll. Pair with Opaline Hardtear and some good defensive talismans, and you’re a light rolling tank for 3 minutes

Great episode! I think when it comes to only needing 2 great runes, I wonder if part of that is an option for flexibility for game progression. I still think it’s odd that you can finish the game with so few, but it does make glitchless speedruns considerably easier. Opening the entire game after two shardbearers plus Morgott is a lot of fun for replay value to me, I enjoy taking on the game in an unconventional order sometimes just to mix things up. I think too that not requiring all great runes allows for people to not have to deal with Malenia or Mohg, who are relatively hidden and I know I only beat after Elden Beast my first few playthroughs. In general though I’m a fan that you don’t need many shardbearers to beat the game, the more flexibility the better.

For the Margit refight - I think this is a case of design over lore. On your first play through, it's probably been at least 40 hours since the last time you thought about Margit. This fight helps put his existence back into your brain so you're primed and ready for Morgott

I use Rykard's greatrune, cus Im a snake fanboy! If you pair it with his talisman that has the same effect the lifegain is pretty good and comes in handy if you summon in to help a person with an area.

With regards to the jars and the minor erdtrees, given the similarities between the design of the buried jars and the warrior jars, it’s possible that the jars are filled with the bodies of those who did not earn a full honours catacomb erdtree burial and are returned to the roots via these pots.
