QUAKSTAK 9: Terrible High School Reading

The worst Connor I’ve ever read is hands down Prototype video game, tie-in comic. Horrendous dialogue, plotting, and art.

Just read slaughterhouse 5 for the first time this year. Very enjoyable but kinda anxiety inducing. Maybe. lol I remember in English class once, we read Anne Frank and then switched over to a book about the American south, I can’t remember which. And my teacher was telling us all about how white people hated black people and used them as slaves… this is Highschool for more context, I remember asking my teacher; “if all the white people hated all the black people at the time, why didn’t they kill them”? Asking about genocide which we had just learned about, and instead of answering the question like “labor” or whatever she stops, looks at me, and says, “how could you even say that?” I looked at the only other black kid in the class like… bruh… tag in. Lmao

Hearing "Nothing But The Truth" described -- and *knowing* it was something I had read at some point, but which adolescent me had immediately discarded as pablum -- was such an uncanny experience.

Fellow English major here, and I also can't recall any of my K-12 English teachers ever talking about symbolism. Pretty sure I would have remembered that key to literature had someone mentioned it earlier.

Is it weird that my "for fun" reading is the discworld series? But, like, just over and over again. I've read the entire series from The Color of Magic to The Shepherd's Crown probably 15 times.

joey pigza swallowed the key, for some reason my school thought if I read this book about a kid with ADHD it would somehow cure me of my own as a special project outside of my regular studies.

I'm so glad someone brought up Wuthering Heights. I didn't love everything I read in school, but that was the first book I actively hated and still lothe to this day.

You guys wanna hear about the absolute failure of public education I had? I was in AP English in high school and I never had to reas actual books, nor was I taught anything about symbolizm. I'm bot even joking. We had those fucking literature text books and occasionally read a random short story got asked "what was that about?" And Shakespeare or a classic american play (i watched the Wynona Rider Crucible adaptation, i shit you not, 4 times) were the teachers did scene summaries. All my education basically came from college, so thank fuck I was privileged enough to afford to go....were i got an English degree! Not even my dogshit school could keep a love of a good book and writing from growing in me.

Oh, fuck YES, Gwen! I absolutely adore the Locked Tomb books. I wish you could've talked more about them because they're a goddamned gem.
