Real Lich Hours 20: The Arcane Tower
Added 2024-04-28 17:41:45 +0000 UTC
This tower is known or only knowable by a few.
A wonderful couple details in the Festering Cove: You can find a scroll of Bhaal scripture that's presumably the reigning influence for these fish folk, but you can also find a little message in a bottle written by Doni, a tiefling child we met in the Grove! It's a letter to his lost Dad whom he hopes is still alive somewhere.

The encounter with Bernard is pretty tough in Honor Mode, where his aura has a Chain Lightning effect. Fortunately, the top floor of the tower has a large open window, and if you answer his first poetry line correctly, Bernard will helpfully go stand by it. A fall all the way down onto the front steps of the tower did 60 points of damage to him in my playthrough, giving us time to thrash the Animated Armors a bit before he caught the elevator back up.

Just a random coincidence I would have never expected. I named my character Orpheus and made a warlock that looked like Orpheus from Venture Bros. then really funny to start hearing all about this mythical Orpheus of the Githyanki.

But will stun you if you're not a construct! But if you get those gloves...

Just a quick shout out of another good reason to fight the contracts at the top of the tower: Bernard’s weapon, the Light of Creation. It’s a named glaive that does additional lightning damage and has a chance to stun enemies.

This is clearly and obviously not the place for this but I want to say I think your guys' episode of WOFF on Pathologic is the best podcast episode I've ever listened to. As someone who came to you guys after beating DS1 and searching for "Dark Souls podcast" in 2015 I can say I have no regrets in being a long time $10 supporter. But I've honestly thrown that episode on as background noise on so many drives and sleeps its a bit embarrassing. I've never even played the game. BG3 and RLH forever, you guys rock.

Absolutely. I don't have Wyll in my main party this run through so it hasn't popped up as much.
In act 3, we'll start doing character episodes where the whole episode is "Here is Shadowheart's Complete Story."
The biggest challenge with this show is disentangling. The next 3 episodes are super tangled, it's just a challenge to organize the information in a game this information rich. -GB

The fish men's delusions-into-true-worship bit is incredibly reminiscent of 40k's Orks! The Orks' whole bit is that they all have a low-level psychic ability to shift reality to their own perceptions that grows more powerful the more Orks are gathered in any given area. What this means on a functional level is basically Daffy Duck riding around on his invisible tricycle going "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible," but on a species level. This means that virtually all their weapons and technology is completely useless in the hands of anyone but an Ork, since they're all just giant piles of gibberish that the Orks convince themselves is functional.
One of the best/more famous examples of this is a story of a group of humans who ran out of ammunition trying to fend off wave after wave of Orks. They eventually resort to just holding up their empty guns and shouting "Bang! Zap! Bang-bang-bang!" and discovered they were killing far more Orks than they were when they were using actual ordinance. The humans seemed to have the defense of the city in hand until a group of Orks walking around holding up a giant shipping container start approaching the humans making tank noises.

I built Gale as a sorcerer with a dip into evocation wizard to turn off friendly fire. The fact that he could still learn spells from scrolls made it feel like he was just pretending to be a sorcerer. "What you doing over there Gale?" Drops a bunch of scrolls "Nothing nothing just pondering my raw natural power...no learning here 😅"

In short if you have a level 5 spell slot you can learn a level 5 spell. OP

I know this episode was going to mainly focus on the Arcane Tower but if I was going to bet money that the episode description was simply BOOOAL! I would have lost an entire paycheck. Keep up the good work, gents.

Comment about wizard multi-classing and spell scroll learning was not correct. You can only use scrolls to learn wizard spells, but your caster level determines the spell level you can learn. That means you can prepare and cast a level 6 spell like globe of invulnerability with a 1 level dip in wizard as long as you have at least 10 levels in Bard, Sorcerer, Cleric, or Druid. You still have to prepare the spells and cast them with intelligence, so you could only prepare 1 spell from the wizard level if your character is stupid. You could use warped band of intellect to prepare 3 and then swap something else in. As long as they don't have a save dc or attack roll, the spells are fine. Good options include haste and globe of invulnerability Great 1 level dip.

I love that you can use the Sussur Flowers to power down the Arcane Turrets, and then have to use them to power up the tower. And Gale finds it a bit much that someone would apply poetry as a password function for their automated robots

On that note, will things like Mizora and Wyll’s connection to her also be a topic of discussion. I don’t think you’ve talked about her yet?

One important part about the Phalur Aluve - Shriek ability is that it adds 1d4 thunder damage to every hit for enemies in the AoE. This can help add really big damage for stuff with multiple hits like magic missile, scorching ray, and eldritch blast

We mentioned it when it first showed up. The dream guardian hasn't come up for me in a while in this playthrough!
But it's good feedback. Camp stuff is sometimes hard to fit into episodes/make sure we cover, likely due to a failure on my part :)
We'll do a Dream Guardian roundup between acts 1 and 2, I think, since the guardian becomes more active in act 2. Sincere thank you! -GB

Hey am I crazy or has the show not mentioned the dream guardian yet? They are sort of the most important character in the game and unless I am misremembering there were several visits in act 1.
