As a Kaija aficionado, I prefer Biollante myself.

We laughed, we cried, and had a really really really good time.

I guess this is to say that I don't think your read on the series of movies about a giant flying turtle is at all shellow.

Having researched kaiju movies on JSTOR, I’ve come to the conclusion that the elevator pitch is unironically “would you like to pass a cool ninety minutes in a dark air-conditioned room on a hot summer afternoon.” For the adults who took their kids, the movies served as extended promo videos for the Japanese studio system by highlighting rising talent and lauding veteran actors with silly cameos. If you don’t have that childhood nostalgia or operate within that media ecosystem, I’m honestly not sure how far the appeal extends beyond the visual spectacle. The intensity of the fandom mystifies me as well, and it makes me feel less alone in the universe to see you both shrug your shoulders in the same way I shrug mine. Pro wrestling is a perfect analogy. It’s so perfect that I believe I’m going to steal it, thank you.

The Swedish language is also very similar to German when it comes to animal names. Just like you mentioned in the episode turtle and raccoon also directly translates to shield toad and washing bear in Swedish (sköldpadda and tvättbjörn). We also have fun words like flodhäst (river horse = hippo) or fladdermus (flutter mouse = bat). Kinda funny but it makes sense I guess 😅

I truly thought this was going to be a Gameboy Camera ripoff of some kind. My surprise!

Your confusion in the episode is understandable if tokusatsu/kaiju stuff doesn’t do it for you. As someone who grew up with it, there is some tongue-in-cheek fun watching glorified muppet beasts wrestle, especially if you have a favorite. It may not seem like all that much, but that alone is pretty substantial for me. P.S Gary: Monster Hunter wyverns/monsters are bursting with ecology. A lot of npc chatter in the main quest lines, especially in recent games, almost always deals with the where why and how of the monsters you’re fighting and what their particular deals are. Monster weaknesses also tie into how they live, like burrowing monsters being weak to sonic disturbances or gluttonous monsters being more likely to take bait. Your observations are generally on point, but as a fan of MH I wanted to put it out there. I love a lot of MH monsters for the same reason you love Beholders, dude.

It’s very funny you guys were so defensive against potential rabid Gamera fans out there and then I realized what you said about kaiju fans and wrestling fans overlapping and I understood

I think you guys were mostly right about Kaiju movies. However, there are a few notable exceptions. The Original Godzilla, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla Minus One are all doing something more with the themes. The OG is about nuclear weapons, as you well know. Shin Godzilla is about the failures of Bureaucracy in a disaster. Minus One is heavy on anti-war themes and the effect of war on normal people.

John Jewett

As a non-godzilla fan, I recommend Shin Godzilla. The only one that really impressed me.

I’m not sure if they are anime tropes, but I’ve sure as hell seen them in anime. Could be they are filmic tropes that made their way to anime. Either way, felt very wrote to me. The olde-timey sci-fi stuff is cool though! I think it’s a totally fun/fine movie. But I don’t dislike anime adjacent tropes.

Wild. I've mostly heard good things from non anime sickos, so I figured it was light on anime tropes. -GB

I don’t think Gary would like Godzilla Minus One. It is full of tropes commonly found in anime. It’s also so fascistic to a noticeable degree.
