The philosophical questions of dark knight are like… pretty dated. I didn’t like dark knight rises at ALL.

Oh 100% agree Gary. As someone who listens to a LOT of LGBT fiction as a lesbian, it is frustrating how Queer is the only label these books are given. On audible and even some federal online libraries 'LGBT' IS the only genre you can select to pick from. I've spent HOURS looking for mystery/horror novels with queer leads. It's like how some fans online recommend Interview w/ a Vampire, Hannibal, and Our Flag Means Death in the same sentence. Queer isn't a genre, and it tells you very little about the actual product/plots being marketed at you.

As a straight cis guy, I'm always a little ginger about expressing this, but my dream is a world where we have robust gay villains and shitheads, not just morally pure comparison pieces. Everything for everybody. -GB

yeh being a queer artist working mostly on queer YA book covers it's a bit of a monkey's paw that all queer fiction by default gets marketed as LGBT+ first over any other concern. There is a huge market for it and it gets people to read books that would otherwise get ignored but there is a huge flattening quality to it where absolute drek is considered of equal value to things that are well written/actually transgressive. It can even hurt stuff that goes really interesting/difficult to stomach places because there are certain twee "everyone's a good special guy they're just misunderstood" expectations to the "genre" that causes backlash

Now...i know the Game that shall not be named didn't come up because Gary hasn't played it (and i refuse to name it because i want a WOFF and i want him and Kole to roast that "sacred cow") ...because i think it is quite possibly one of the most overrated video games ever. Yes, it's better to play than the first game, but, to me, it has no heart because it's so up it's own ass about only really caring about its themes and being philosophically winky. There's my vague, cold, hot take.

I can't find the damn thing (and i may be misremembering so MASSIVE asterisk by this statement) but i recall an interview with Tamsyn Muir where she diplomatically said that she really doesn't like the "lesbian necromancers in space" tagline because it's super reductive and tells you next to nothing about what the book is actually about. It's a neo-gothic, science fantasy, action mystery set in an isolated location with rich characters and a fascinatingly unique universe. There's a better one-sentence tagline. it's a run-on and kinda sucks, but it's better. All of this is to say: Gwen nailed it, marketing is the fucking devil and is a major contributor to why the point where art meets capitalism is such a rancid shit hole.

Firefly is a great answer, but doesn't come up. -GB
