Watch Out for Fireballs! 438: Tunic (Premium)

I think our lovely hosts absolutely forget to mention how fluffy Tunic's little tail is.

This week we talk about Tunic, the perspective-shattering puzzle-adventure game that emulates being young and not knowing how video games work. Does Tunic stand up to the giants that taught it how to walk? At the very least, which puzzles are too clever for us to solve on our own? Tune in to find out.

Played this up until The Librarian and I share Kole/Gary's complaints about the combat. I personally feel that the game is straight up too hard and that the iframes don't work half the time. I love a lot about this game, but the difficulty was a real turn off.

I played this game in the days recovering from wisdom teeth extraction. I completed it but the only thing I remember was the blinding pain in my mouth. Don’t think I ever went back to finish the final few puzzles

I *instantly* bounced off this game when it came out due to combat, like within the first hour. Real floaty boring chippy dodge roll 6 times to kill a mook combat. But I came back to it later and had a better time. I ended up with 14 insurance bombs by the end. I threw bombs at everything. The enemy gauntlet was achieved by expending 40 bombs. Tunic: Bombs.

Like Kole, I love the music. I think the overworld theme ("Memories of Memories") is one of the songs that justifies the existence of this otherwise unjustifiable universe of ours. (Like "Everything Is Going to Be Ok" by Mick Gordon, from the Prey 2017 soundtrack.) Great interview with the composers on "Level with Emily Reese" Podcast (ep. 249). And I *love* the art direction and environment design even if I don't like the Little Guy's eyes.

Really enjoyed this game, also turned on god mode for the final boss. Looking forward to what the developer does next!

I’ve technically never played this but re: collaboration, my roommate started playing this when I first moved in and one of the first times the house started to feel like home was we bonded over taking notes! I would stop in and see what he was doing and by the end of it I was the Notemaster and three of us would sit on the couch and argue over puzzles. Truly a magnetic game

Lizard

Classic SoulsBlown game

Don’t worry Gary, I wish I had that feeling gene needed to enjoy the outer wilds

Stoned Skeleton

When I played Tunic, I also really bounced off of the combat. I was expecting more of a Zelda-like than a souls-like. I didn’t beat the final boss because it felt like a Sekiro boss was plopped into Dark Souls 1.

Steamtastic Vagabond

I think the tail fluffiness may be outweighed by the smallness and beadiness of the eyes
