Real Lich Hours 39: Assaulting Moonrise Towers

Whether you’re a goodie-goodie or a ne’er-do-well, Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate III will culminate with some massive battles at Moonrise Towers. This week we talk about dealing with Ketheric’s forces on the ground floors before ascending to the roof to fight the man himself… with or without the help of Dame Aylin.

I haven’t had people in camp cast spells on the group but I could see it within the RP. These gypses could at least once per day do something useful instead of meandering around camp all day.

JSYK you don’t have to optimize for honor mode You can ride the fantasy all the way to the finish

Warlock- paladin is a very strong class, if you want to keep Minthara somewhat close to her normal class. Pact of the blade let's you scale melee attacks off of charisma, and Eldritch blast scales with character level (not warlock level) giving a strong ranged option

As far as multiclassing a Paladin/Warlock goes, I can confirm that it's very, very good. I was a Paladin for one of my early playthroughs and taking just two levels in Warlock (1 level for Eldritch Blast and a 2nd level for the Agonizing Blast Invocation) was a major game-changer. On-demand ranged Force damage is such a powerful boon to the party for both combat and exploration, I almost can't imagine running a game without at least one EB user in the party. Sprinkle in the Savage Attacker feat as well as a pinch of Ilithid powers, and any Paladin can become an absolute war machine in any encounter. In addition to that, having a little Warlock in your character adds a lot of good flavor! In a game where a majority of possible companions have some sort of seemingly unstoppable entity lording over them, (Vlaakith, Mystra, Zariel, Cazador, etc.) giving Tav a Warlock patron adds a few great instances of "Damn brother I'll drink to that." dialogue when your companions open up to you about being kept on a metaphysical leash.

For the fight on the roof of Moonrise, my Shadowheart managed to get off the Banish spell on Karniss (I didn’t kill him earlier in the Harper fight because I was afraid of rocking the boat before getting to Moonrise), and Karniss disappeared for the rest of the battle. After forcing Kethric to retreat, I short rested twice and walked around the corner to go back downstairs, and I stumbled onto Karniss once again, just chilling behind a corner. Combat started when he saw me, and I was able to end him quickly since it was a 1v4 fight and I was at full HP again. This is the only meaningful time that the Banish spell has worked for me lol

Wait it's pronounced "hay-dar" not "huh-dar"?

Repelling eldritch blast always has a comical kill count for me.

Typhoon Jim

That is one class the Duckfeed boys have kept under. ..lock and key nehehehehe. Sorry I just listened to the tales of the crypt episode an so absolute stinkers of puns keep gurgling up. Apologies all around.

MeltyHam

Maybe so, cuz I didn't fight him inthe first phase too.

Joe Binson

dog wasn’t there for me either. I did succeed in the SETTLE DOWN dialogue check with him. Maybe if he has doubts he doesn’t summon the dog?

Richard Cochnar

We still haven't played a Warlock! I'm thinking about respec'ing into one though. -GB

Y'all gotta give a shout out to eldritch blast if you are talking about force damage. It is the key that opens every lock! Speaking of locks I have heard Palilocks Paladin/Warlocks multiclassing is quite good so that may be another route for minthara.

MeltyHam

Really? I guess because I only fought Keth once, but don't remember the dog being there, just a couple of guards?

Joe Binson

Also I dunno if y’all knew this already but a Paladin’s Smites are set to automatically trigger every time you hit with a melee attack. You wanna toggle it so they are set as a reaction, so you have constant control over when and which enemies you’ll use them on.

Storm Sorcerer works really well with a Vengeance Paladin. Gives Minthara the ability to fly and the Sorcerers metamagic abilities synergizes really well with Paladin too

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

You have to kill it in the fight with him.

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

If you’re the Durge you don’t even need to do a check.

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

This fight on Honour Mode where I killed Aylin, and thus didn’t have the Harpers was quite something. Although, knowing the shortcuts into Ketheric’s private rooms by climbing unto the carrier beams can save some time and effort for the fight with him

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

An advantage of not having the Harpers (or not caring what happens to them) is that you can skip the first floor entirely. To the left of the main entrance you can climb up the side of the wall and then jump across to the balcony outside of Ketheric's room. It's a tough door to pick but you can get in and just fight a couple of hallway guards and the necromancer/necromites just outside of the door to the roof.

Timothy Post

Could I suggest making Minthara a paladin/sorcerer. If your lvl8 then 5 levels into paladin and 3 into sorcerer gets you mirror image, sheild and misty step. You don't need ranged if you can teleport.

Cano

I loved that breaking Linsella's spell on the Gnolls will so endear you to them that you'll fight on your behalf in the first melee at Moonrise.

Richard Cochnar

Wouldve been kinda cool we couldve recruited his robotic like dog. Doesnt it just disappear after the battle? I forgot to check on it after.
