Watch Out for Fireballs! 465: Super Mario 64 (Premium)

Genre defining, boundary pushing, console selling; Super Mario 64 had it all. One of the defining games of the Nintendo 64 and of the early 3D era left a huge legacy behind, but we can only really talk about it in full if we go back to where it all began. There's a letter, a girl, and a promise of cake. This is definitely not a trap.c

Banjo for life!

MeltyHam

I always loved the first 50 stars, then slogged my way through the final 70 just to beat the game. I stopped playing after credits.

Your hatred of the snowman teleported me back in time. I remember struggling with hiding behind the penguin then realizing I could ride on top of it's head and not get blown off. Proof that I'm not crazy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pCQeHUl-RQ Mario 64 is one of those games that kid me with too much time on his hands constantly tinkered with. There is a lot of friction that I forgot about until listening to this episode because I had endless time to get better at the game or found easier ways to do things (e.g. you can shoot yourself out of a cannon at the start of the level to get that same snowman star). A younger me with infinite time did get all 120 stars but adult me would fall into the same chunk of people who play until they beat the first Bowser fight and run out of steam before finishing the basement stages. I love this game, the movement especially, but I don't really mind leaving it behind.

It is not a very long game, but I think you two would have a fun time, and make a great show about a two-player Octodad campaign.

Not only did this not age well in the long term, by the time Banjo Kazooie came out a year or two later I never went back to it.

and it is called "In Rainbow Roads". Very cute.

Thanks for another great episode! I had fully intended to beat the game before listening, but after about 40 stars I had completed all the levels I enjoy and couldn’t work up the motivation to continue. Sounds like that’s the case for almost everyone!

Abe

This episode does make me wanna finally get Bowser’s Fury and Mario Wonder

I feel.better about never finishing this game back in the day. I always got bored about halfway through. Glad I'm not alone

Michael Ridley-Dash

Chain chomps are massive before this. in the best Mario game ever Yoshi’s island (not sarcastic)

i replay this game like once a year its impossible for me to be objective about it. i remember when i first played it as a 7 year old kid and the castle felt like it contained limitless mysteries. looking up into the sun painted on the lobby ceiling & being transported to a world in the clouds was like, mind-expanding shit lol

sleepysmiles

also letting you know that this isn't up on the individual feed

Cassandra Banner

Someone made the entire In Rainbows album by Radiohead using the Mario 64 soundboard tunes, and it’s amazing and sounds really good.

Closing google after listening: So long, gay browser.

I learned to type with Mario Teaches Typing in the dimly lit back room of a christian school where they kept The Computer. never heard it mentioned since, thank you for confirming I wasn't dreaming

Hazel Honeycutt

I think the niche in time this game filled cannot be overlooked. The sheer wonder of exploration and discovering the physics of this game were awesome to 15 year old me. Too bad the boys could only enjoy it through the today lens but that’s life for you.

Ian Curtin

Solid choice to open with so much of the Bobomb Battlefield theme.

Finishing this episode: So long, gay podcast.

Hey guys, great episode as usual. I don't think the wing cap is as well-hidden as you guys were acting. Once it becomes available there's suddenly a big obvious beam of light shining down in the main room of the castle, it doesn't take too much curiosity to use the camera controls to look up at it (and IIRC there's a sign nearby detailing the camera controls, likely for this exact reason) so if you didn't already know about it, I imagine you would have found it pretty easily on your own. IMO it's the least well-hidden of the three caps. Also: Mario's crawl animation isn't entirely useless! It let's you climb any steep slope without falling (albeit very slowly). There's one or two stars I always get use out of it for.

Inter-Party Conflict

I remember beating King Bob-Omb and him saying "come back and visit us, sometime!" and then full-body exploding and thinking "I guess he's ok, and he didn't take it personally."

Mario 64 goes into the list of games I played to the point of hating. (Along with Goldeneye). My own fault for being a young completionist and not having money for new games. Got all the stars in Mario 64 and HATED it by the end of that process. Still, it was the first 3D game I’d ever played and when I first touched it in that Blockbuster, it was revelatory.

Don't worry, I and all my friends will be there to protect your homestead when they come for you over your Donkey Kong 64 take

Fringleton

I remember opening this and the N64 for christmas with my siblings, but being a 4/5 year old I started crying because "all I got was the controller". This is arguably the most formative early gaming experience I had, very excited to see you cover this.

Kyle Knapp

I highly recommend everyone check out the unofficial PC port of this, sands out so many rough edges and lets you customize it in many regards to your liking

Daniel K

Historic impact: Let's-a-go! Modern replayability: Uwaaaah!

Eric

I feel like even before listening to this that its going to be a certified WOFF banger. Never had a Nintendo 64, so games as a service, hell yeah.

Kay Francis

First game I ever played. Castle is etched in my mind forever. Not to get all zoomer creepypasta on everyone but the castle DOES have an insane off putting vibe, especially in the offshoot dead end rooms, and specifically the courtyard that’s just an empty space once you clear all the ghosts. Wild shit
