Public Feed Update Progress

Hey folks! Kaye here. A couple of weeks ago I posted an announcement that we're moving our audio hosting entirely to Patreon for both our Public and Premium shows alike (the free shows are still free and accessible via RSS just like before!). The process is going smoothly now and I'm doing it a few hundred episodes at a time, as I get opportunities to go in and fix titles and stuff.

I got a message from someone saying that their podcast feed was being inundated with old episodes that they've had to delete one at a time. This sucks! I don't want it to happen. It shouldn't be happening with existing public feeds you're already subscribed to because of how the import works (the "guid" field in the XML file remains the same, telling your podcast app that an imported episode should not be considered "new").

HOWEVER, adding episodes on Patreon will make the combined Patreon premium feed, which most of you are subscribed to, show old episodes as new. I cannot think of anything I can do to avoid this happening on my end, other than not making the migration.

Many podcast apps don't treat episodes with publish dates from a long time ago as new, and won't mark them as unplayed or download them automatically. As far as I can tell, this is the case for Overcast (the app that I use), Apple Podcasts, or Pocket Casts (the three apps I use to test things on iOS). I cannot speak to how Android apps treat things differently, though the FAQs for Podcast Addict detail how to change settings per show including setting automatic episode cleanup for podcasts older than a certain date.

If you're running into this problem of new episodes flooding your feeds, please check to see if your podcast app has a way to change its settings per feed, at least for the next couple of weeks as I move things over.

This is all a long way of saying "Pardon Our Dust". This will make things better in the end! I swear!

To give a progress update, in the past two weeks I've consolidated Gary's old short run shows Heartbeat City, Pilot Season, and Dead Idea Valhalla into the Duckfeed Presents feed. File Under Water and Best Quality Vacuum now live entirely on Patreon. For bigger shows, all of The Level is now on Patreon (along with its precursor show, Stand Under the Don't Tree and Riddle Me This), and I'm on the verge of having Abject Suffering all squared away on here as well.

I had a call with Patreon to discuss a concern I had about the hybrid Public/Premium shows being migrated, but that has all been squared away and those will be my next targets.

That's the status so far. Have a great weekend! I'll be spending mine getting episodes moved.

Hey Kaye - not sure if this is a show thing, pocket casts thing, or me thing - but recently the default WOFF feed stopped working for me in Pocket Casts. I can no longer download or listen to episodes from that feed. I just get a "cued for download" message. Anyways just thought I'd mention in case it was happening to other people

Hey korben, I took a look and I see the same issue replicated on my own feeds. I have no clue what's wrong, and I've sent a message to my contact on the team at Patreon so they can look at it. I know it's annoying if you want the combined feed, but in the meantime you can subscribe to individual feeds to get the content you're looking for. When I hear something definitive back I'll check in. - K

Hi Kaye, sorry to bother you but it seems a lot of the audio URLs for episodes in the combined premium feed are now expired. I tried to download some older Unfilmable episodes (e.g. Se7en, Gremlins 2) and it wouldn't work with my RSS fetcher (Newsboat/Podboat). The feed itself works fine but downloading the episodes fails and putting the URL in the browser just showed "Expired URL". I tried some other episodes from other shows in that feed as well and same problem. Seems to start with episodes that are only a few months old. The most recent episodes work fine. Edit: Just reimported the feed completely from scratch and now all the older Unfilmable episodes are missing. So that's why the links were expired. Only the 2 most recent episodes are listed. Sorry, I'm probably a bit dense and don't understand which feed I'm supposed to use but I thought with the recent change everything would now be fetchable from the combined premium feed, and Unfilmable used to live in that feed as well, right? Thanks for any help!

Which shows are giving you trouble, and which versions of the feeds? (Private vs. public) YouTube Music is currently having trouble scraping the public feeds for automatic uploads, it’s a known issue and being fixed. But I don’t think that should have an effect on just subscribing to the RSS and downloading the audio files, it’s only a problem for their “we will turn this audio into a gigantic several hour video of a jpeg” system.

Hi Kaye and/or Gary, I tried adding the new RSS feeds into Youtube Music, and they just refuse to work for me. The old ones were fine, but these new ones will not work. I am copy/pasting them and doing it via web browser (most error-free method) so IDK what is going wrong. Any help would be appreciated!

It should have the premium woffs. The public woffs are on their own feed at watchoutfirfireballs.com. This will be fixed soon, but WOFF is the most complicated show ahead of me. - K

The combined feed seems now to include all duckfeed podcasts exept the public WOFF episodes. Is that correct? Am I missing something?
