Painting the Tongue

We cartoonists love to draw tongues. Here's one that has been inked, color filled and has a gradient. Ready to paint.

First, I'll select the 'fill' layer. This enables me to paint without going past the border.

I make a group and call it 'shading' or just 'sh' for short. In this group I will add layers that I can paint each individual texture on. I can hide the selection dotted line by pressing 'command-H'. It might be a different key command on your computer.

I start painting by brushing a highlight near the top edge of the tongue. I used a grainy brush.

Then using a soft brush I brush on the split at the bottom of the tongue.

I paint another light line under the split line.

I turn of the painted layers for a minute while I get a spatter brush and paint some spatter from the back of the tongue to a little past the middle. The spatter gives an impression of all the little nubs on your tongue.

Then I turn on all the layers again and paint a shadow under the tongue tip to finish up.

This was a fairly simple tongue render.

Here's a slightly fancier one.

Next: Hat texture.
