And as for your comment about having a historical companion, Victorian Governess Clara was supposed to be the companion for this season. That's why the kids suddenly pop up in Nightmare in Silver and then suddenly drop off the show afterward. According to Neil Gaiman, when he started writing the script for that episode, “The original companion was going to be very much the Victorian governess we saw at Christmas," and as the script was being developed, he was suddenly informed that they changed the companion and he had to re-write the script on the fly.

New Patron here so I've been catching up on the old full lengths. The reason for the weird schedule with a Christmas special in the middle of the season is they split Season/Series 7 over 2 years, so we had the first half in 2012 and the second half in 2013. They did the same thing in Season 4 having 2 Christmas specials - most of the season in 2008 ending with "The Next Doctor" and then just 3 episodes for the whole of 2009 with The End of Time Pt 1 as the Christmas special that year. Technically 2 episodes for 2009 since The End of Time Pt 2 was a New Year Special. You see the same thing with Husbands of River Song and Return of Dr Mysterio, we got back to back Christmas specials because we had no Dr Who for an entire year in 2016.
