The best thing I can tell you is to do your best with what you have. You can still be successful. I would stock as much food and water as you can. Also a way to defend it. I know you are not going to be running and gunning, but at least a handgun, or a shotgun. In an event, if you are in a small town, the odds are you might have good people around that you just are not aware of now. I would just do as much as you can, stay positive, and keep trying to meet people to form a group with. I know OPSEC is important, but if you could tell me what state you are in, I might be able to help with some group information. Some of us are destined to be alone when the balloon goes up - recommendations for us? I'm older and disabled - it is not going to be easy. Also not in a rural setting, just in a small town, in a quiet residential area. The advice always is to get with a group, but that is obviously not working out.
