TIME TO DUMP SOME TEA IN THE HARBOR!

Hey y'all, Patreon is being required by law in some countries, as well as several American states, to start charging sales tax to some Patreon pledges starting July 1, 2020.

According to Patreon, "Less than half of all patrons will be charged sales tax, and for most, the amount will be very small. For example, sales tax rates in the US range from 4% to 11%, so on a $5 pledge, that would be between 20 cents and 55 cents. Whether or not you will be charged sales tax depends on your location, and what is considered taxable there."

Since I don't offer physical goods as tier rewards, I don't suspect this will affect you guys much – but some of these new laws regard streaming services as taxable. Since I offer bonus video content to my $20 and $50 patrons, this may fall in the category of the sale of streaming media, and may be subject to sales tax (again, depending on your location).

But I'm not a lawyer and don't understand the intricacies of these new laws, so it's probably better that you hear it straight from the horse's mouth – Patreon has a relevant FAQ page here, which breaks down which states and countries are affected. Hopefully it can answer any questions you might have. If it's completely unhelpful feel free to hit up Patreon's customer support people, here.

Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up way ahead of time. Love y'all xoxo

Personally, I'm from Chicago. The only thing we dump from our waterfront is ballots we don't like. My county needs as much revenue as it can get (especially now). I'm good with it. No tea dumping for me... :)
