Good House of the Week: Cass County, North Dakota

This week's Good House of the Week is relatively quotidian compared to previous installments. What I like about this house is that it demonstrates that you can still build a lovely house with relatively standard, inexpensive materials.

While it's true that I'm no fan of the front-facing garage, I think that by separating it from the main house and building it at a slight angle helps balance out the composition somewhat.

The house goes for a Craftsman-style look with tapered pylons for the front porch and sightly extended eaves. The composition (sans garage) is symmetrical and well balanced. The home sticks to three cladding materials, which helps with formal consistency. The small clerestory-esque windows in the upper left part of the house is a nice touch that appropriately details an awkward mass. Note: don't look at the back of the house, it's not as nice, unfortunately.

You weren't kidding about the rear exterior. My God, it's like the backside of a movie set.

Not bad (the front facade and the interior proportions, that is). It looks like quite the tornado magnet, though, sticking up out on the plains as it does.
