Good House of the Week: Lincoln County, South Dakota

This week's house is a bit unusual looking, especially its hipped-on-gabled roof. However, inside is a cozy little house that is surprisingly large.

Hipped-on-gabled roofs were briefly popular in the late 60s and the 1970s, alongside other unusual roof shapes such as the Mansard. It's rare to see a side-facing hipped-on-gabled roof on a new home, considering that they are most commonly associated with commercial architecture, specifically Pizza Hut. Personally, I think that the unusual roof shape is what gives this rather plain-looking house its uniqueness. Perhaps the only element I would change is the front portico. I'd make it a little shorter and replace the tuscan columns with something more modern.

The house is something in between a ranch and a cape cod. Like many small common houses, the side and rear elevation are extended (and somewhat incongruous) in order to provide a suitable amount of living space. The decor is a little HGTV-y for my taste, but it does a good job of making a house photographed in the dead of winter appear warm and sunny.

I don't need that kind of positivity in my life.

Link broken! At least for me.

I look forward to the nice houses more than the McMansions now.
