Good House of the Week: Charleston County, South Carolina

The house borrows from a variety of styles, including Colonial Revival, and vernacular styles such as the I-house (with a full width front porch, typical of architecture found in the Tidewater region). Today, we'd call this style "Farmhouse" and be done with it, but it does have some roots!
This house is wonderfully proportioned (simple, symmetrical massing, porch is not overly monumental) and the craftsmanship appears solid. The details are wonderful, such as the well-coordinated windows, the functional shutters, proportionate columns, and exposed rafters. The house is "built out" (expanded irregularly) in the rear, which is not unusual considering its vernacular heritage, as common houses were often added on to when families grew. The decor is coastal, but tame, containing lovely built in details, such as the breakfast nook.

So much to love. I particularly am infatuated with the all the horizontal slatting used in the exterior cladding and how that is then brought into the foyer on the walls (along with the cornices being used throughout). Love the wainscoting, and the OMG the tiny Stutters on the bathroom mirrors.
