New Curbed Editorial: What makes a flexible house?

It is perpetually stunning to me how you can be so effective in writing both intelligent, educated, print-worthy articles as well as hilariously captioned text-speak, slang riddled meme-quality posts. That is a compliment, in case it came off as not that.

Very thoughtful piece. I like really like the idea of planning for living rather than planning for stuff. We are at the end of a major renovation of a 250-270-year-old house. We only increased the square footage a little to make a former uninsulated space (large enclosed porch) into more useable space (insulated mudroom/pantry/laundry.). The bulk of the money went into energy efficiency (windows, insulation, siding) and a moderately priced kitchen. The house was originally open to the South, but we created more openings to the East and North due to the changes in the land divisions. We have three bedrooms, but one is tiny. Younger child is in it now and will get bigger bedroom when older one goes to college. We have two bathrooms, and I refused to add any more, because even though another half bath would be convenient, the thought of cleaning three toilets is oppressive. I think we renovated for living, but I will say I am ridiculously excited for the additions of closets and a pantry. I would recommend in newer houses that people think about more shallow openings for storage rather than entire rooms devoted to them. That way your stuff can be part of your living and you can find it easily.
