2016-09-20 17:10:32 +0000 UTC"After decades of rhetoric about what makes a home valuable (spurred in part by HGTV and other media outlets claiming that stainless steel and other trivial pursuits LITERALLY add ten gazillion dollars to the value of your home!!1)" - this reminds me a great deal of a finding in Freakonomics, where house value was correlated with certain specific materials or details, including "granite" mentioned in real estate listings, and negatively correlated with vague superlatives. It sounds almost like HGTV got wind of that data and interpreted it as saying that, e.g. granite specifically makes a house more valuable, rather than that more expensive houses tend to be advertised more with specific features and less expensive houses with vague superlatives.
