I think the two 1916 houses you use here illustrate a big change in the separation of private spaces from public ones. in middle class homes The standard one story layout of the era (and making a comeback today with the return of narrow lots) runs public rooms along one side - LR, DR, K, maybe another space, back door - with beds and bath separated by a door on the other side. That must have felt so good for working families to be able to entertain guests without cleaning every damn thing in the house.

Excellent info! Also, I am still deeply in love with Art-deco typography. Why don't we have fonts like that now-a-days?
