Improves curb appeal, but usually results in less efficient use of space since it forces the driveway to arc back behind the house. Given that suburbia is already space-wasteful...

Somehow I get the feeling that since McMansions are usually shoddily constructed it's more cost-effective just to raze them and start again.

There are a ton of rear entry garages where I'm from (Dallas) in both tasteful and not so tasteful houses. Although we have a pretty even mixture from what I've seen - just depends on the neighborhood. I know it is less common in some cities than others but is it really that unusual throughout the country? I've travelled quite a bit but I've never really paid attention to that. I think putting the entry in the back improves curb appeal. Maybe I'll find out in your upcoming "Looking Around" series!

Here's a question: do any architects specialize in taking McMansions and remodeling them into something more tasteful and energy efficient? Is it even possible? Sounds like people could build a career on it.
