Hey Friends! I'm currently in Europe and have limited internet, but have no fear - there will be two Looking Around guest posts. One will be tonight or tomorrow and the other will be next Saturday. I apologize for the delays! Please enjoy this picture of adorable and perfect Swiss chateaus as compensation.

Traditional domestic architecture -- chalets in Switzerland and Germany, cottages in the west of Ireland, whitewashed hillside homes in Greece -- is almost always perfect for the location, harmonious, and functional. That's true in much of the US as well, e.g., farmhouses in Wisconsin, downtown homes in Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans. It's only when architects and builders ignore the local traditions and try to import, combine, or create styles that we get the monstrosities you share with us.

Still working on the post - no reliable wifi in the Alps so it'll have to wait until I'm in Lucerne tomorrow
