Auto-Tailor - page 17 - Process

Since the colors and shading were done by my partner, Jade, I'm going to talk more about other aspects of my process in more detail.

1. I start with a rough thumbnail to plan out the page.  This is just one full-page panel as we see the main character being pushed back into the Auto-Tailor booth. This viewpoint, showing the character moving away from the viewer, frames the character as both going away us (signalling the end of the story) and being lost as if the character is falling away from all help or hope.

2. Now I go in and work out the final poses and proportions. The proportions needed some tweaking and I roughed in the  bunching of the fabric since the draping and smooshing made the skirt especially complicated to draw in this situation.

3. Now I go back and work out all the fine details.  At this point, there's a lot of adjustment as I move folds of cloth here and there to make sure that enough of the date's body is shown to make it easy to understand what is happening, avoid any weird tangents in the linework, and adding some extra secondary motion in the hair. I also added a few robot arms for extra menace.

4. Then I ink everything, using a couple of different pens (one with a blunt tip, for outer edges, and one with a fine tip, for fine detail). Thicker lines in closer objects contrast with thinner lines in distant objects.
