Dawn of Womanhood - Process

1. In Clip Studio, I draw rough thumbnail to get the basic concept down.

2. Rough sketch. I make a more formal sketch to work out the layout, pose, and proportions. I start getting some of the details roughed out. I used the Dawn picture to make sure I had the exact same scale as before.

3. Final sketch. Now I go back and do a more detailed sketch, working out the the bodies, clothing, and hair. Like last time, I put a lot of care into find poses that let me show off enough frilly detail in silhouette that you can read just how frilly that outfit is.

4. First step is laying in the ground. I reproduced my old Photoshop grass silhouette brush and made a simple grassy horizon.

5. I added a vertical gradient for the sky using four colors I sampled from a photograph of a sunrise sky. Then I added a round gradient for the sun. I also copied the flare pattern from the Dawn picture for consistency.

6. Using my cloud brush I added in two layers of cloud in different colors depending on their position in the sky. For each layer, I started with a bright color that is darker than the nearby sky, paint in the cloud shape with my brush, then lock the transparency of the layer and paint more cloud in the same place usng a darker brush.

7. Silhouettes. Since this will all be silhouettes, I used a constant-width brush for almost every outline, switching to a variable-width inking brush just for the sharpest points (such as the tips of hair). Then I add a raster layer and fill the silhouettes with the paintbucket.
