I-Land Episode 6 - Reaction

I’m trying to remember exactly what I was thinking about this episode when it aired. I do know for a fact that we already knew who was eliminated because of the preview from the week before 😂 Like they tried to blur the trainees but fans literally went frame by frame and figured out who was wearing what and sleuthed until we were certain who was eliminated. So it wasn’t a shock when the episode aired, we had already grieved and figured the ilanders/producers had their reasons and everyone was way more focused on voting in their favs with the 6 remaining spots. I was just really happy that Jake stayed in iland! Because he had such a short training period, I was worried the producers would eliminate him for some reason we as viewers didn’t see. And I think that’s the main problem with shows like this. It’s literally ALL edited by a separate editing team focused on producing a captivating show NOT showcasing all the trainees fairly. So I think that’s why sometimes a 5-10 second clip of a producers note/criticism/praise may not make sense to us because they probably talked for 5 min or more and had training sessions and worked with these kids for hours and all of that context and footage didn’t make the final cut of the show. Like we know for a fact(because of sleuthing and comments not edited out in part 2 of the show) that the mid-week evaluations are not the only time trainers saw them while preparing for each performance. BUT that didn’t fit the documentary “how will they survive with no outside input” or “do they have what it takes to do it all by themselves” style or whatever the director was going for when they edited the footage. For example, a vocal trainer will “magically appear” in part 2 that you’ve never seen before and she talks about the growth of the trainees as if she’s been consistently working with them because she HAS and it either wasn’t filmed or the footage not included. I also think that’s why it’s super important to have balance on shows like this. Because the producers have such a close relationship with the trainees, they can see the things fans can’t. BUT the fan perspective is important because sometimes when you’re too close to something you can’t see it clearly and fan input is a good indication of how a group will perform from a marketing perspective like what will go viral and what will bring in new fans. Both are vitally important. You need solid trainees who are ready to keep up with the demanding performance expectations of the producers they’ll directly be working with once they debut. AND you need captivating personalities that work well together and will shine in variety content. There are tons of talented deserving people in the world that just don’t shine on camera. And that doesn’t mean they never will! It’s all about TIMING as well as the environment, personalities, training, personal growth and who knows what else. Like I barely remember Jimin(JM) in iland at all(he wasn’t really given any screen time) and he’s one of my favorite member of Just B now! He shines so much brighter in that group than he ever did on this show. And who knows what’s to blame for that, it could have been the editors not including footage, his synergy amongst the trainees or his personality just not shining in that environment. He did standout during that last grounder performance though! I’ve got TEA to spill about Byunghee(Bain) from the same group. He was on Under Nineteen in the performance unit back in the day and I LOVED HIM. He didn’t make it to the top and was dare I say underrated on the show and LOOK AT HIM NOW! 2021-09-09 20:16:05 +0000 UTCit’s sad seeing geonu face so much criticism over this one thing cuz he’s SO talented, and i do get annoyed with the judges on this show cuz sometimes they make no sense istg. HOWEVER, i do agree with some of the criticisms. being an idol isn’t JUST about how talented you are at singing/dance/rap (even if that’s the main component). there’s a reason kpop idols are different than other kinds of singers/celebrities/etc. facial expressions may seem like such an insignificant thing to us as fans, but it IS important when ur an idol. i-land isn’t the only kpop survival show that’s pointed this specific issue out to trainees, it’s clearly a legitimate problem. u need to not only be able to sing/rap and dance well, you also need to be able to PERFORM well (and there’s many other factors that make someone idol material vs a good artist). i do NOT think geonu is a bad performer, but it’s definitely smt he needed to work on. not only that, it’s not the first time he’s been told to work on it; improvement is vital in this kind of show. i can completely understand why people would get upset watching this and feel it’s unfair or an overreaction, but when i look at it from a more neutral standpoint, it makes more sense to me than a lot of the questionable decisions on this show.

2021-09-07 23:13:14 +0000 UTCthe mentors had an obsession with facial expressions from the start and it’s really quite weird. there’s a performance later on in the show in which i’m so passionately against the mentors’ comments because it was almost like they were trying to critique them for the sake of a balanced argument (ie. “this person or this element was good, but this person/ element could be improved because of this”) and it really didn’t make any sense having watched the performance live and then multiple times after. geonu was a massive target in this - it’s the only thing they ever had to say about him. as much as i love the show and the boys, there’s so much that just doesn’t make sense or sit well with me at all. that being said part 2 is a ride, have fun with it!! (lol sorry for the long comment i’m v passionate about this show omg)

2021-09-07 19:19:50 +0000 UTCi was really sad about geonu too but then you see the six left in iland and then its like there is no one i would send to the ground in replacement so whoever would have gone, i would have been pissed no matter cause there are too many talented beans in this show
