Punisher Analysis- "Halloween"

I discuss Phoebe's use of diction, syntax, imagery and more in this track from Punisher.

Punisher Analysis- "Halloween"

Comments

Phoebe strikes me as someone very good at seeing the real literal events of her life in this artistic symbolic way. I think she did literally live by the hospital, and I think this all went down around Halloween, but she is pulling these particular details to express something more than just the literal interpretation of the words. In the last song we saw her describe a house that is literally called “snow white cottage” as “the house you lived with Snow White” in a song talking about idolization and a fans inability to really see their idols as real people. Its both literal and not.

You explain this so well! The intense irrationality of love is definitely significant here. I'm growing to appreciate this bit of the song even though it kind of threw me for a loop at first 😭😭😭

the idea of a mask hiding your identity and protecting you from consequences and really reminds me of the song "balaclava" by the arctic monkeys, it's about being the person someone is cheating with and the anonymity of not being in that relationship and not really having to face any consequences i love the verse about the fan by the stadium, it's one of my favourite lyrics on the album. someone being so overcome by the "love for their team" (or the hatred for opposing teams more so probably) leading them to do something as irrational as killing somebody over sports, which goes with the "always surprised by what i'd do for love" lyric. in a way phoebe kind of compares herself to the killers (in the sense that she'd do irrational/shocking things for love) which totally makes sense because she refers to herself as a killer on her previous album, which is an important idea throughout this album as well.

Interesting! What a sad anecdote to put in the middle of the song. It's fascinating to me because I picked up on the destruction of her own humanity with the use of "whatever" instead of "whomever", but I think you're right in that this story definitely adds to that!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! You are so right about those drawn out "on"s! The desperation is palpable 😭😭😭 Also, irony versus oxymoron is so tricky! Irony (in this case situational irony) refers to the opposite of what you expect. So since a mask literally hides you, you wouldn't expect it to also provoke such honesty. Oxymoron refers to two words (often a noun phrase) that are opposite or contrasting in some way.

I totally agree, her tone is so strong in this one. The “come on, man” with the “on” drawn out so much always gets me feeling that desperation. I also really like how you described that irony (oxymoron?) of the mask, how it emboldens you to reveal certain things because certain parts of you are hidden. Love your analysis!

The “killed a fan down by the stadium” line is a reference to a fan who was killed at Dodgers stadium because he was supporting the opposing team. It’s a really interesting line that speaks to the kind of desperate, toxic love the speaker is in. It’s the kind of love that morphs into reckless destruction (killing an opposing fan, or in Phoebe’s case destroying her own identity to be what the subject wants).
