I hate it when people call Katara the "mom friend" because it devalues her trauma in a really SEXIST way. If she were a man, this wouldn't be considered strange at all, and no one would call a man the "dad friend." Don't you think that all of those millions of movies and tv shows are fucked up though? Think of what they encourage children to think about our society. You said that a MAN doesn't abuse, but then WHO DOES IT? You don't get to decide a man isn't a man because he abuses someone. They are still socially a man, agewise they are a man, and they usually work within society AS A MAN. Did you know that police officers are statistically more likely to commit domestic abuse than any other career? Society views them as men. I bet you do too. Zuko definitely kidnapped Katara and held her for ransom in season 1 episode 9. He used her necklace to blackmail her and manipulate her. Sounds like abuse to me. Abuse can be more than physical. Movies and television are more than just fiction, like you've tried to say to others. They are reflections of our society and our values, and animation particularly holds weight in the eyes of children. Therefore it is not JUST fiction. It's important to analyze regarding our society. Arguing with media apologists like you is why I have a PhD and a career at all.

2021-09-16 12:43:14 +0000 UTCIt’s a mom move because the gaang is her family and mothers protect their family against people that hurt them, aang isn’t her man yet, but I’m guessing from your comment he will be. That being said my wishful thinking about zuko and katara shouldn’t seem that weird, in a million movies and shows opposing sides of a war and completely opposite personalities end up together so that’s what I was basing that guess on, plus I think she would have been good for him and straightened him out more. We in no way think abusing someone means you like them, and I don’t know any MEN that feel that way! They are kids though and sometimes when kids don’t know how to express their feelings towards the opposite sex they do get mean, both boys and girls though..but that’s not how MEN act!! But…when did zuko abuse katara?? They are in a war and they are both fighters of course they are going to fight, but nothing zuko has done has been to directly hurt katara, his mission was to regain his honor by capturing the avatar and she just happens to be with him, zuko has been chasing aang since before katara even met him, so I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s been abusing her. Like John said, these are just theories and guesses we are trying to make, or like don Julio said just wishful thinking, we have never seen the show so we just talk about what we think is going to happen and yes sometimes we are way off but that’s the fun of watching new shows, anything can happen! Katara has every right to hate Zuko. I don't see any romance in Zuko and Katara's relationship whatsoever. And with only 9 episodes left, I am surprised you still think there is enough time to build a romance. I am so curious why people think men who abuse women actually like them. Lol. The entire series Zuko has been physically aggressive to Katara and vice versa. But it MUST be romance. That just sounds so toxic to me. ((And don't spout something about the audience knowing Zuko is a good guy at this point. A smart older brother once said "Come back when the good is outside him too."))
