Roku probably felt more important because the "avatar was dead" so only the past avatar really knew how to help Aang. Think of the episode at the fire temple where Roku was a badass only Shyu was loyal! not many people would know how to train/ help the avatar when Aang was alive if you really think about it with the 100 year war. It would be a death sentence or at least life in prison. But in Korra, Aang left the world at balance so that was my thinking for why he is not filling the same exact role as Roku because Korra has living people to do it like the old ways and could call on the past lives like Aang did in the finale but in my opinion Roku had to do more to fix his mistakes and for Aang to even have a chance.
