Metal bending and sand bending are like a subset of earth bending. One definitely needs to know earth bending before attempting to metal bend! Not all earth benders can metal bend though. Given that metals are earth that have been purified, metal benders have to sense that pieces of earth inside the metal to bend it! Like what Toph “saw” when she mental bend her way out of the box. Same for lightning bending and/ or redirecting and combustion bending. The firebender probably have to be skilled at understanding and their control of chi to do it, and not everyone is able to acquire that skill.
