Time isn't well reflected in this show. Hughes was connecting these dots over the course of hours and days. Lust and Envy knew the core group of people were looking into the philospher stone and digging deeper, so they were kepeing a close watch on them. They would have had time to see Highes connect whatever dots he connected then make a move.
