Im pretty sure it never gets fully explained so it’s better to have this understanding so its not so immensely confusing!! But if anyone thinks differently and finds this spoilery i can delete.

He keeps passing through it until he starts to be in denial. Does not come to terms with the fact thats hes dead and only then is he able to pick it up. Hannah is in denial of her death (partly bc immediately after it happened she was distracted from it by danis arrival so she never had to face it) and this episode was her coming to terms with this.
