Yea it was split among the sons and was a big reason so many big empires/kingdoms around that time split up. it wasntjust a viking thing, charlamegne the great did it too and he was like 60 years before ragnar lothbrok (the semi-legendary father of the commanders of the great heathen army)

But what I understand about how the succession worked back then (though I could be wrong) is that the kingdom would normally be split between the heirs, not that the oldest would automatically claim all. Canute is currently in England, and Harold is ruling Denmark, and I’ll let the show explain the rest.
